you definitely need to be careful when you yawn, and try not to open so wide. also, when eating foods that make you open your mouth wide, like a submarine sandwich, you can also make your jaw go "out of joint". you should cut your food into pieces or take smaller bites in that case.
if i were you, i wouldn't chew gum. that also irritates the situation.

Yea,

I had to have corrective TMJ surgery.

There is a small disc between your jaw and your skull, which acts like a pivot. If that gets out of place, it can be painful. If the tendon that holds that disc in place gets weak, or torn, it will constantly be out of place.

TMJ is a serious issue and can cause all kinds of pains in your face. Jaw, teeth, back of the neck. The TMJ is nervously tied to the temple region (right behind your eyes) and can cause amazing headaches as well.

A dentist can only tell you so much about your TMJ, such as taking basic xrays. My dentist's xrays didnt uncover a whole lot though. My oral surgeon's mri's told the true story though, and elected to perform surgery. Worked out pretty good so far.

Your jaw should never click, catch, or pop. If it does, you should see an Oral Surgeon. Otherwise, be prepared for lots of random headaches and jaw pains.

ahhh, that concerns me techboy, doesn't sound like fun. how serious is the surgery? is it like regular surgery or more like wisdom teeth. I'm guessing the former :(

anyway, dentist appt. at 3

well, that was a bit dissapointing. took an xray, and the dentist concluded it sounds like a muscle problem. it isn't hurting as much as it has been today, so he could not really pinpoint where the problem is, so he said to call and come back when its hurting. :/ I hope it just goes away

anyway, I've had a weird jaw pain lately, was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing or has any idea what it might be.

It came out of nowhere as far as I can remember, no injury or anything. It is a pain in the right side of my jaw, only when I bite down hard/chew, and it hurts more if I shift my jaw towards the back of my head. It doesn't hurt when I open my mouth. It doesn't hurt if I push on my jaw with my hand, neither does it hurt if I push down on my teeth with my hand with my mouth open.

Anyone have any idea of what I might be expecting when I get to the dentist/doctor? I don't grind my teeth at night or anything. The pain kind of settles down at times, but only for short periods. the pain isn't too bad it is just really aggravating and annoying. On a side note, I have been having headaches lately too, which is rare for me. Also some pretty bad pain in my shoulder last night, but I am 99% sure that is definitely unrelated, and is gone now.

AT-MDs unite!

can you generate a clicking noise from that side of your jaw if you move it from side to side? There is a condition, forget what it's called and I'm pretty sure I have it, where the tendon connecting the lower jaw is twisted over itself, or something like that.

tough bread can lead to a semi-dislocated jaw (I feel that it's dislocated, but mostly just quite painful).

I need to have it checked out, for sure. as do you...

Clicking should not occur. It would be like getting your knee cap stuck in your knee joint. By design it's not supposed to do that. However, it IS a common thing, and for most people it doesnt get bad or painful enough to intervene.

My surgery was pretty quick. Knocked me out, then they went into joint, cleaned it out (i had chunks of cartiledge from the disc broken apart all up in the joint), pulled the disk back into place, covered it all with some kind of steroid, then told me to take it easy.

you might want to see an oral surgeon the next time.

I have random jaw pain on the bottom right. Ever since my wisdom teeth were coming in, it was pushing really hard on my biggest tooth. They were moving around and stuff over the course of a month or so before my wisdom teeth were taken out.

Before they were taken out, it felt like a jackhammer on my biggest tooth. Now, the same side will randomly hurt but it's more like nerve pain. I've had X-rays since and they are all clear, so I think it's some type of inflamed nerve problem from either the removal, or the whole-teeth-getting-slowly-crushed-thing.

The pain is mostly in one tooth, but can move to other teeth, sometimes hurts where my wisdom tooth "used" to be. X-rays say I'm all clear. /shrug.

Go go ATOT doctors.

mri? most of my tmj problems werent discovered until an mri was done.

People can pretty much skip their dentists if you suspect TMJ issues. This is oral surgeon territory.

ive got issues with my tmj, for me I dont chew gum or anything that is really hard, force my mouth to open really wide like during a really good yawn and there are some jaw exercises that you can find that helped me alot. A few months ago I could only open my mouth about a 1/4 inch, the worst headaches that I have ever known and it slowly went away, now I have the odd headache and they are really not that bad.
