Anyone ever had a tortoise for a pet?

My daughter wants a Russian tortoise from the pet store. I am curious how much care they require and other pitfalls.

I really doubt these will make good pets for young kids seeing how long they live and they are not "cute and fuzzy" like most other pets.

Turtle soup? 😉

Most people think they can just run around the house like cats and dogs but they don't realize they need certain temperatures and certain humidity that without they won't live very long.

I would still be way to worried to have a turtle since they can outlive humans in most cases.

My nephew had a Russian tortoise and it's not a very good pet at all. They require a good bit of care and don't provide a whole lot of enjoyment in return.

My buddy used to have 2 huge tortoise's. The huge mother fuckers you see at the zoo. Had them in a huge chain link fence on the side of his house. I really would say taking care of them isn't a big deal. As long as you can manage to throw food and water in once in a while. I never saw the point in them though. They don't do anything.

Thats what I am afraid of, when the novelty wears off it will be me taking care of it.

I will just tell her they attacked and killed a kid 🙂

If it isn't furry, it's generally harder to care for. Reptiles and amphibians require more care in handling, and the body of knowledge you can access isn't as great when you run into problems.

I thought only the giant sea turtles lived that long.
Not quite sure what happened there in the quotes but even these Russian tortoise live about 50-70 years and it's not that uncommon for them to live 100 years in some cases.

I had a turtle once. I wouldn't quite say he was retarded, but he sure was slow.

We had a turtle in our science lab back in high school. They were fun to play with, but not really as fun as a cat or dog, or even a gerbil. they don't move much but they wont hesitate to bite your finger if you put it in front of it's mouth. 😛

As far as exotic pets I would love a pet squirrel, they're so awesome as pets. Like having a permanent kitten.

ive had several in my family in my lifetime. the problem is they get huge. my uncle had a african leopard tortoise that got big and he had to keep it inside in the winter. he kept it in his bathroom but it ripped the toilet off and moved the claw foot style tub breaking the pipes.

they are cute when they are little but not good when they get big. it takes a long time for them to get to a dangerous size but overall i wouldn't want one again. they are very cool in many ways but belong in their natural habitat.
