here's what it looks like.

i am thinking about getting one, but i can't seem to find any info about it's size. i like it becuz it uses smartmedia cards, and none of the proprietary memory upgrades that certain other mp3 players use. i'm hoping it's not too big and luggy, that it would feel awkward jogging with it. anyone have any comments about this mp3 player?

I had the old one that didn't have usb and support for WMA.

Here's the breakdown:

-Bad battery door that kept coming loose (had to rma it).
-Accecpted a extra memory upgrade, but the two memory banks were seperate. So if you have 300kB left on primary memory, you couldn't use that to span a song over to the extra smart media card.
-No character display (Titles, names etc)
-No Backlight (at least I don't remember there being one)

I don't think it's worth 99$. Maybe 50 or so?

Dont do it. The battery door thing is really pervasive with these guys as the case is cheap plastic. You're much better off snapping up a Rio 600 given the prices they're going for lately. If you dig around you can still find Nomad IIs for about the same price as the Rio One. They're much nicer: metal case, FM. waaaay more memory support (mine is 32 onboard + 128 card).

Hey bro. I've had one of these. And ditto on the battery door issue.

I do, I like it and yes, I have had the battery door open up on me very often, though it jasn't broken yet. Also, the screen has no backlighting and is to small to display any track info, which sux cuz I usually have around 40 songs on there at atime and you can't tell what they are unless you listen to them.

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that the "random" function is not very random? I think it's based on day of the week. I have noticed that when I use my RIO a few times on the same day and I skip through the songs randomly, it always goes through them in the same order.

Nomad IIs are not metal, are they? They certainly appear to be plastic. I owned a Nomad II MG (which definitely WAS metal), and for the most part liked it, but the Nomad II appeared to be a better design ergonomically and is worlds cheaper.

Hmmmm, upon further perusal, may not be metal. Hard to tell as it's painted. Much nicer construction than the Rio One in any case.

I have a Nomad II (DAC-00001). No built-in memory, but it has an FM tuner, voice recorder, and support for 128 MB smartmedia.
If you get one, make sure you know what you're getting. A lot of the new Nomads out there are IIc. They have soume built in memory but no FM tuner.

Nomads are small and sexy-looking. And yeah... made of plastic. But WELL MADE. i dropped mine from mid-chest level to a paved side walk and it's still going strong after a 2 years.
