anyone ever gone on any fishing trips?

i'm thinking of trying to organize a fishing trip with some buddies over the winter time for like 3-4 days. i was initially thinking some place down in florida that is warm, but then one friend was saying he would rather go somewhere north/west of where we are, like montana, alaska or washington state. i'm in MD for reference.

has anyone done any fishing trips? if so where did you go and what would you recommend? i've never looked into something like this before. we'd probably want to do some chartered stuff but also be able to just take our own fishing rods out to different places and go at our own pace as well.

EDIT:

i'm not talking about just like 4-8 hour day trips out on a charter boat, but more of organizing a vacation that is gear towards fishing the whole time. also, if we did go down to florida to do it we could also do some scuba diving which would be nice. can't do that in colder areas.

EDIT - Ok. Didn't see your edit in time.

I used to go down to San Diego to take 5 day trips on a large boat to Mexico for some tuna/yellowtails/grouper fishing. Basically you just stay on the boat where the cooks make all sorts of food for you and all you have to do is eat, poop and fish.
It's an expensive trip. Can cost upwards of 3k during peak seasons (summer). In the winter the prices drop down to 1k or so. But in the winter, the water can be very rough and once you're on the boat, you will need to bear the 5 days before you get back.

yeah i don't know if people would want to do that or spend $3k on it over there. plus we need to fly over there. i talked to some of my buddies about going on one of the shark cage dives that take you out from san diego into the mexican waters, and those were like $3k for 5 days all inclusive on the boats, but they didn't want to do those either. you do a bunch of fishing on those as well.

I haven't been myself, but look up videos on YouTube of 'glacial national park fishing'.

I watch a lot of outdoors videos, and if I did ever go on a fishing trip, I think I'd want to go there.

are you thinking of glacier national park? if so one of my other friends (not one who would go on this trip) went there for his honey moon and said it was awesome there. he didn't fish or anything but he said in gneeral it was beautiful.

My camping trips are specifically to fishing locations. Fishing is probably the #1 activity, averaging about 6 hours a day, trailed by #2: sitting around the campfire enjoying a few beers. #3: water skiing/tubing.

Our primary target is bass, though occasionally pike. And, often late in the morning, we switch over to panfish to have something for lunch. Typical week costs about $250-300 for campsite (water, electric, septic) and dock space. Plus another $300 for gas for the boat, and maybe $150 for fishing items that are consumed (hooks, bait, etc.)

Being from the MD you have the a national scenic river close by, the Shenandoah. I usee to go there several times a summer. I used shenandoah outfitters to drop me off up stream. I had a 16 foot mad river shallow V ABS canoe. But you can rent canoes and they will drop you half a day, one, two or three days up stream. Lots of class 1 and 2 rapids which are easy and one class 3. Tons of camping along the shore and mountains on both sides. LOTS of small mouth bass and of course with canoes you can carry lots of beer er gear...

Great entry level way to take canoe river fishing trips

i'm definitely looking to go somewhere where i will be catching fish larger than bass. all i really do is bass fishing as it is, like 2 or 3 times a week, in lakes and rivers around where i'm at. so i'm thinking of doing something more where we could go out on boats on larger lakes too while we're there.

as far as the shenandoah river, i've been there too to go tubing and camping but never fishing. i'm looking to go further though as in some place i have to fly to that is further away, preferably south of here so it'll be warmer in the winter. but not 100% on having to go south to be warmer, if it's somehwere to catch some large fish.

i've always just thought that going after those big ass salmon would be cool too. i'm even open to going to canada if there are good spots to go up there.

Yes.

One video I saw was two guys that just went out dispersed camping, found a lake, and within a couple of hours, they had eight very large fish (trout?) ready for dinner. And that view... wow.

After seeing that, if I ever meet someone who likes to fish and can teach me, I'm heading out there.

You mentioned you're looking/waiting for someplace warm... but have you tried ice fishing? The winter is coming, and as bad as it sounds, fishing over ice, inside a tent, getting drunk is a great time.

Minnesota is great fishing and is very reasonable. We go a little northwest of Duluth/Superior and have a ball. A cabin for 4 guys is about $6-700 for the week, so $300 a guy covers food, beer, bait, and lodging. We catch everything from perch to walleye to huge muskie...

Check out the floridasportsman.com South forum and check out the Yankee Capts and Outta Control recent trips. Anywhere from 2 - 4 days of pure fishing in the Dry Tortugas with some massive hauls. Thinking of a trip myself... eventually.

i'm actually going to take a day trip to dry tortugas next month when i'm in key west. but it's not for fishing just for relaxing and exploring with my wife. i have heard that it's awesome down there for fishing though, like some of the best in the world. i'll definitely check out that forum.

and yeah i don't really think i would want to do a full trip in alaska doing ice fishing. i have thought about something like minnesota though, is it good to fish there in the winter?

Pics from the 2013 season so far, damn http://www.tropicstar.com/photo-galleries/2013-season.html

Highly recommended for those tired of catching bait. Pinas Bay is hot as fuck during the right time to be there, and the waters can be a test for those who think they have sea legs, but it's so worth it. The billfish action there is nothing short of amazing, huge yellow fin are almost an annoyance (but keep the resort stocked on incredibly fresh sashimi) My only regret was not bagging a roosterfish. Food and service were epic. I'd love to do it again in the future, maybe take my boys there for a few days once they are older.

Awesome trip if you like getting a workout to land your fish, and Panama also has amazing beef and steakhouses for those not down with cerviche and the like.

For you guys a trip down to The Keys might make the most sense. You should go check out what they have to offer in Islamorada or Key West. My little brother is a first mate in The Keys, they've been having great seasons for sails, cobia, and wahoo, and mahi mahi are almost always hoping out of the water down there. There are also back country charters there for those who want to chase tarpon and bones in shallow water, which is loads of fun. Anyone who has ever hooked into a pissed off 150lb+ tarpon knows what I'm talking about. The bridge channels and structures around them can produce permit and snook if you have the right bait and know what your doing.
Dry Tortugas are really awesome purbeast, nice grouper and muttons there! I want to go back with some SCUBA gear and a Hawaiian sling. Weather wasn't with us the one time I was there.

For you salmon guys go check out Ketchikan, up in Alaska. We loaded the damn boat with 4 different varieties in about 2hours, it was amazing. Got to see frolicking whales on the way back in, great trip.

I always like fishing in the surf. Not sure how the weather is in FL. You'd almost be better going even further South and hitting the islands.
