Anyone ever EBay anything "local pickup only?"

This is NOT a FS/FT advertisement; just seeking advice, thanks.

I have a Cerwin Vega LW-15 HT sub I've been trying to sell locally; I put up flyers in supermarkets and other public places. No takers.

Next logical step is EBay, but I can't ship it; the thing weighs about 50 pounds and the shipping cost would eat up all my profit. I was thinking of selling it "local pickup only."

Has anyone done anything like this before? A comparable sub, new goes for about $350; mine is in excellent condition, so it's worth something, you know?

try craigslist? I think it makes more sense since its local pickup. What are the chances that someone will be browsing your ebay thread, be interested in your item, AND live in your area. chaces are a little slim

Why not sell it "plus shipping"?

I've sold a JBL 12" subwoofer that weighed almost exactly 50 lbs. Worked pretty well (sold for more than bought it for).

Go to your post office with the sub (or without, they could probably quote you a price anyway) and find out the maximum shipping price to the continental US. That + $5 for box and peanuts = what you charge for shipping in your auction.

I've seen people say "Buyer must arrange shipping and pay for all charges in connection with shipping."

If they want it with no box, wrapped in tape with an address stapled to it, fine. 😉

Hmm. I guess I never really entertained the thought of actually shipping it due to the probable high price involved.

All I'd waste is the EBay posting fees...I'll think about it.

Thanks guys. 🙂

You might also check Fed-ex ground, there rates are generally surprisingly reasonable for heavy items. You can get rates online.

Fed Ex ground will be like $20

Just get a 2 big boxes (one bigger)..

Wrap the sub with bubble wrap .. .put in the smallerbox

Put the smaller box in the bigger box and stuff with styro peanuts

Thanks everyone.

Aside from the cost, I worry about damage. We've all shipped stuff; an 8oz videocard wrapped in bubble wrap in a box fairs a lot better than a 50-pound piece of wood wrapped in bubble wrap. 🙁

I would just kick myself if the thing got destroyed in transit and I had to refund the money. Double loss. :brokenheart:

I eBayed my giant 32" Sony WEGA TV that weighed like 220lbs. I had some guys drive down from Milwaukee, WI to Central IL and pay me cash for the TV. Good transaction.

 Cha-ching!!! I'd be SO happy with a result like that. I guess I'll give it a shot.

For someone with a small, 4-cylinder car, a few hundred miles is only a $30 trip. For someone with a truck (like me), it's n $80-$100 expense!

That's what shipping insurance is for 🙂

I've sold tickets on eBay for local pickup, and actually had a buyer request local pickup for a wireless mouse/KB set once.

Both worked out very well!

eh, it's standard practice for the buyer to pay shipping on eBay.. what's the problem? lol..

As long as you're confident you can package it well.

Yeah, but that's the prob. How do you securely package something that is essentially a wooden, 20" cube and weighs about 50 pounds?

Guess I'm just a shipping n00b. 😱

I've sold lots of computer parts on EBay, but packing PCI cards and hard drives is easy stuff.

I bought a headunit, sub with amp attached from a fellow anandtech-er. I think shipping using usps was around $40ish or so. I just finished the clean install today after going ghetto for a few weeks. A good, sturdy box, lots of peanuts and bubblewrap and you should be covered.
