anyone ever done stump grinding or had a stump grinded for them?

got another guy coming over tomorrow to look at it. told him about the stumps over the phone and he ball parked $400 without hauling it away or anything, but he's stopping by tomorrow to check it out and give a more formal estimate.

Seems on the high side. Forgot what we paid to remove one from my old house, but definitely less than that. Tree guys are always looking for work - at our new house, we have a fairly large tree that needed a good trim. I'd come home from work daily to find business cards for tree trimmers. (Yea, it was that bad)

Anyway, rate is always negotiable, like in any other work done to your house. Get a few bids and work them against each other in your favor. I'd highly suspect the guy quoting $500 knows he is high.

Depends on the area. I have two stumps that are probably much bigger than yours. Been waiting for a guy I know to do it; he was going to charge me $100 for both. I told him I'd give him $100 each. Another guy, who already had the equipment at my neighbor's house (so I figured he might give me a good rate, since there was no extra travel, etc., just do the job as a quick incidental job) gave no discount at all; wanted $200 each.
