Anyone ever donate a car to charity?

We have a '95 Ford Contour with 212k miles that we're going to be getting rid of. I doubt we'd be able to sell it for much, so we are just thinking about donating it to a charity. From what I'm seeing it looks pretty simple, and they will even come pick it up.

Has anyone done this? If so, what did you think? Thanks!

Just be careful. Most are scams and the IRS looks out for people that donate cars now, esp to shady places.

Hmmm...really? Any suggestions on ensuring that a place is reputable?

We (my parents) had an old ford van, a huge van.. we used to travel around in it. but when all there kids (me) moved out they donated to a shelter for women that have had a rough life. They use that to drive them around and pick them up now. Its really cool to see driving around town. Not sure how it worked, but the got it valued, and had that paper notirised or something or other and got some cuts on taxes or something... i don't made my dad happy. I just got all the memories of being a kid again :)

the place we donated to has been in our home town for years and years. atleast 60...
