So I live in the Northwest and I am going to be going down under(Perth,Australia) to go to school in the next year. I am going to be staying with my family down there.

Anyone do anything like this before, any advice that you could give me? What to take, what I should do?

Right now the things that I am going to be taking(besides the obvious, i.e. clothes and things)

Digital Camera(though I need a new one so feel free to make suggestions)
Laptop
Ipod Vidoe

I went to school in the Northwest, and I also studied abroad. Although I went through Eurpoe.

When are you going? Do you have some money saved? A lot of the people that went on my trip never wanted to do anything outside of the class because they "Didn't have any money." I felt kinda bad for them, until we got to the bar/club 🙂

Where do you go to school?

I currently go to school at Oregon State Univeristy, I will be going to University of Western Australia, I would probably leave in November.

I will have some money saved after my job this summer, this year has sort of left me dry right now.

Anyone have any tips or advice to offer, what to bring? See?

I know there are plenty of folks on here that are from Australia.

PM Aphex, he's studied in the Netherlands, so he might be able to offer some experiences with studying abroad. And I think dug777 is from Perth, or near there, so he should be able to help with questions about Australia

Yep, ive been fortunate enough to study abroad twice now (Utrecht, NL in 02 and Oxford, UK in 05)...

G'day S Freud

I've been an on and off member here since 2001. I live in Perth. It's a very laid-back city.

There's quite a lot to do here, depends on what you like really.
Rottnest Island is one of Perth's treasures http://www.rottnestisland.com/en/default.htm Spend at least a few days there at the height of summer to soak up the experience.
Fremantle is the port city of Perth. Great place to hang out and get cultured. There are plenty of local breweries with quality ales, such as Little Creatures, Matilda Bay and Sail & Anchor.
A trip down south is also a must. Beaches galore. Try surfing the break at Margaret River.
The music scene is fantastic. Perth is the driving force behind Australia's alternative music talent, so be sure to go to plenty of gigs (check the Xpress newspaper). Also, the Big Day Out is held here in early February, and the line-up already includes the Chilli Peppers and Muse, so it's lookin the goods.
Oh yeah, I hope you like a sport called cricket... The Ashes will be on when you're here, it's going to be huge. Unfortunately tickets are already all sold out.

If you want more ideas just let me know.
