As long as im not alone....lol

I've had laptops for years, but dont really use them as often as id want to. I have a pretty large home office with a dual monitor setup that i'm on a lot of the time. I use my laptop sometimes for typing or surfing the net from bed. I dont really take it on the go much anymore now that im out of school and am sure that I probably wont need a full fledged laptop for work in the up coming months.

However, now that a new breed of mini notebooks are coming out - not to mention at a cheap price, i'm really thinking of getting one.

Does anyone else have laptops they dont use that often? My GF thinks its a waste of money, which I sometimes do too, but its not like i need the extra money. It's only like 500 anyways. And when i sell in 2 years, i can get back at least 300.

If you enjoy having something but dont use it that often, is that so terrible?

I cant be alone, who else gets laptops or upgrades they dont use/need?

I have had 6 laptops since 1995. I buy them for travel. When I am not travelling, they rest and get run weekly for updates etc. But - it is essential for travel, and that happens probably two weeks out of every quarter.

I just bought a laptop I do not 'need'.

I bought it for three purposes:

- I am a developer and at work I often like to try and learn new technologies in my free time and the laptop would allow me to work in a less restricted environment.

- My desktop computer at my apartment is the communal computer for my roommate and I, so having the laptop will allow me and my girlfriend to watch movies / shows in my bedroom.

- Travel

No, I didn't need a laptop, but I think it'll help me get more work done and give me a bit more freedom.

I'll be buying a laptop by the end of this summer that I don't really need. I just want something to do while I wait for my next class while at school. I have lots of breaks between classes and it's not worth it to go home and back.

maybe you should get something cheap like 500 dollar range, or a used laptop
then it won't be so bad, even if you don't use it much

The only reason I ended up getting what I did is because I figured if I was going to get a laptop it had to be able to handle the large amounts of data my work laptop did and the deal I ended up getting on it put it at about the same price as an outlet laptop + warrantee.

Those Dell deals can be really good when they are available.

hahaha, this is my issue! I have a great desktop, huge monitors, great for gaming and word procoessing, and work even gave me a D630 to use...yet I bought an M1330............... I dont know why!! It was a good deal, and my GF uses it. I also use it to use VAG COM on my car to run diagnostics, and some gaming when the GF uses the desktop. But it gets rarely used, haha.

Actually, I bought it for my trip this winter to Europe, so we can use it for the night.

Tell me about it, I bought one FOR my mom so she could check email without having to go to her sewing room, and could leave it in the kitchen for recipes... sits in a drawer most of the time.

I bought a $900 laptop I didn't *need* but I wanted it to play games w/o having to go to my basement where my desktop is.

I bought a laptop back in March, already having a desktop. I mostly use it to roam around the house on the internet, something I can't do with the desktop. I guess if I ever go to Starbucks, I'm prepared to browse the net with it. This is my first laptop ever.

I bought a laptop for my dad a year ago and he's probably used it for 5 hours.

As for me, I just bought a laptop for a geek project I've interested in. SSD. :)

Laptop means more freedom to those who use PC. So no, I didn't buy a laptop that I don't need, I simply bought myself more freedom. :)

I just bought a laptop last sunday... can't say I need it. The way my setup is now, it's a hassle to use it at home, but it's convenient to be able to take it to school/work as well.

That said, I could easily do without it, but eh.

I don't need one but the sub-notebooks are just to interesting not to get one to play with. I do travel a couple times of year and it would be nice for that as well. I am currently awaiting final reviews and availability of the MSI Wind and Acer One to decide which of them to get.

I just bought a $500 Compaq laptop for me to run basic Windows things and programs. Yes, I know I can run Windows on my MBP, but it's constantly annoying to reboot to just do one short thing, plus Parallels/Fusion doesn't offer the performance I need.

edit : so I guess you can say that I don't really need it, but it's just nice to have this around. It's also more energy efficient to run this second laptop than a desktop with some 22" LCD.

I have mine mainly for when I visit home, which is usually once a year. When I'm there, I need to have a machine with decent enough performance to play games with my brothers. The rest of the year, the notebook is used for DVDs, videos, and as a test bed for different OSs.

My main computer is a laptop, mainly because I decided that I "needed" one to take notes in class. I only really used it properly as a laptop the one quarter when I took a programming class and otherwise it's pretty much stayed put in the dock on my desk. The only time it ventures out of my room now is pretty much when I'd rather check fantasy scores than listen to the lecture :p

Use it as a backup to my desktop, and for traveling. That's it.

I think it was worth it though because having the extra computer for "those times" when ur desktop is down or if your moving a lot comes in handy. Even if it mostly sits in your case most of the other times. Just get a cheap one. I see them going for mid hundreds all the time.

I plan on getting one before the summer is over with. I have a very old one I use rarely. My gaming rig is down and I've really wanted a new laptop for some time. I'm going to get me one, whether I truly need it or not.
