We were initially trying to go to the cook islands for our honeymoon, but since airlines like to be jerks w/ their frequent fliers and frequent flyer miles we are thinking of a backup place to go to in the Caribbean.

What is Curacao like? We saw some pictures and it looks pretty interesting. we basically want to relax on the beach and snorkel. any other recommendations in the caribbean?

We went to an all inclusive in dominican republic two years ago and while it was relaxing I didnt really enjoy being hawked at 24/7 and being offered trinket goods for $50USD nonstop. I want to avoid any island like that (I know jamaica is like that too apparently) if possible.

Why not go to Aruba right next door?

Beautiful island, no one will be hawking you trinkets, everyone is nice and the food is good! If you decide to go, let me know I can reccomend some restaurants to eat at, where to snorkel etc.

We stay on the north west side at Kura Hulanda lodge resort. It's perfect for us because I mainly want to dive and eat good food. It's small and maybe not what you're looking for but it's our gem and we go every year but our goal is to dive and snorkel, there's a nice reef not 100 yards off the (very small) beach and shore diving is nice. There isn't much on that side of the island so if you want to get out and about it's not for you. Aruba would be a better choice for that and the beaches are very nice.

never been there but want to go there. been to aruba and that place is awesome, actually going back in March.

don't know much about curacao other than i've heard the diving there is really good, and there isn't much to do other than that. but again, that is just what i've heard. hear it is really nice though regardless.

EDIT:

just read your OP and saw the thing about snorkeling. aruba has some nice off shore snorkeling. not sure if you are looking for other parts of the world, but Maui has some REALLY good snorkelling off shore in a ton of different places. also just an all around very beautiful island as far as nature goes.

Aruba is absolutely gorgeous. Weather is always perfect, the beaches are spectacular, the people are friendly, there isn't a lot of poverty, people aren't in your face constantly trying to sell you shit... It has been my favorite island so far...even more than Barbados.

You could always go to Aruba and visit Curacao or Bonaire for a day trip.

thanks for all of your responses. If we are unable to book the cook islands for our honeymoon, we will be going to Maui this winter and then to some caribbean place in september after our wedding. My fiance doesn't want to go to hawaii for our honeymoon simply for the fact that I always go there (albeit just oahu) and she has already been there, although she loved every minute of it. go figure.

The Cayman Islands might be a good choice too- but don't stay on 7-mile beach. If you stay on the other end of the island it's much quieter and less touristy.

If you want even more remote, stay on Cayman Brac or Little Cayman.

I was thinking of going to Aruba with my gf in February, I wouldnt mind some recommendations.

I went with my ex this past January and plan to go with my current gf again in January. I have two friends (brothers) who live down there and they showed me a great time when I went.

Restaurants:

- Pinchos - This was my favorite restaurant. Very chic, outdoor on a dock restaurant and the food was amazing. Get drinks & desert. You won't regret it. (http://www.arubarestaurants.com/international/pinchos-grill-bar/)

- Passions - Very romantic, you eat on white tables on the beach. Food ain't bad, ambience is amazing. Dip your feet in the sand watch the sunset and enjoy a meal and some drinks.

- Driftwood - They serve the fresh catch of the day and other seafood. Really good I thought. Somewhat expensive, although every good restaurant in Aruba is expensive.

To see:

- Take the crazy ass jeep tour to the natural pool. The off-roading is half the fun. Don't be hungover though, they may ask you to drive 😀. The natural pool is pretty awesome.

- Lighthouse at the far end of the island - the beaches here are also very very nice because it hasn't been built up yet with many hotels, tourists, etc. Water is actually clearer and sand is amazing. Absoloutely beautiful. Eat at the restaurant atop by the lighthouse here with your girl - the food isn't great but the view is to die for especially at sunset. Can pretty much see the whole island.

- Try to stop at a local bar around the time people get off work. You will see them if you walk/drive around past the tourist hotel areas. They serve smaller Heienkens (not the ones they serve in USA either, it's a lager rather than a pilsner) ice cold and some snacks. Really cool experience I enjoyed just hanging out with some random people.

Other than that, it's pretty much just a relaxing place to go. All the beaches are public, very safe, weather is always perfect, go in to town for shopping, etc. You are going to love it and want to go back. I am the person who always wants to go to new places (going to Colombia in 17 days) but decided that Aruba would be a place I take a girl to once a year.

of the three ABC islands, there will be far more people/commercialization on Aruba. They're all pretty similar topography-wise, but if you're looking for seclusion/relaxation, my vote is Bonaire, which is really a beautiful island with great snorkling/diving.

That said, there's no comparing the Pacific/Cook islands to anywhere in the Caribbean. Rarotonga was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

Where would you go to find the best deals? Thinking of stopping at AAA and seeing what they can offer.

we belong to costco and costco travel has some great packages to the cook islands. If i was able to book the costco cook islands package without their included airfare, and instead use my frequent flier miles to get to the C I it would be a steal. unfortunately, nothing's quite easy. and redeeming my frequent flyer miles on a partnered airline isn't as easy as doing it straight with united, who doesn't fly there. (They used to fly to fiji, but they stopped that service just in time for my honeymoon, bastards!)

i can not agree with this statement more
