Anyone ever applied for a state job?

Anyone have any experience with this? Never applied to a state job before, and they were pretty vague about it, just gave a time and place.

Trying to figure out what to expect

Youll prolly show up to a huge group of people. Youll be seated in groups, or just told to sit in a room depending on the number of people. When I first did it, it was all on paper but these days Im sure both the app and the test will be on computer. If you come to this site, chances are you've got the brains to get in the top percentile range.

That being said... NO DONT DO IT TURN BACK NOW!!!!

Yes I have, but there was no group examination. They either called you for an interview or didn't. I do have to say it does help to know someone in the agency you are applying to.

My department has written tests to weed out people. If you pass the written test and score high enough, you can get an oral interview.

My roommate got a state job in AK which had a group interview and he has the social skills of a severely impaired box turtle.

Took a FF exam for the county, there were about 1,500 of us in an auditorium. I got called back for the physical but unfortunately just had knee surgery...

(I think they were hiring ~50)

Well, took the exam.
It was some basic database work and proposal reviews, more tedious than challenging imo. I'm confident i did good on it, then again I can't imagine anyone with a 5th grade education or higher doing poorly on it.

There were A LOT of people there, at least 50+ for 2 openings, so my chances don't look that great honestly.

They said they will have the results this week, but I still haven't heard back from them yet so growing a bit worried.

I just took an exam for a city job. Sounds similar to what you did. There was a group of maybe 100 and there are only two openings. The exam was on a scantron. Pretty short too (only 50 questions). Maybe half were general customer service questions and the rest was on tech. stuff.

the state job entrance thing, is hard to get through. I had an oral exam instead of a written one. But it seems they dumbed down some of the advanced positions, like the engineers, scientists and environmental planners with take homes.. (IMHO thats what i feel). Anycase.. once you pass the exam.. and assuming you are in the top # of positions then you get on a list. During your exam you say where you would like to be posted, when i did this, i said anywhere in the state of california. Anyway once you pass that exam and are on a list, you got to wait for them to write to you and also check out www.spb.ca.gov for open job listings. EIther they send you a mailing with you responding if you are interested or not and if you are then you add an resume with it (STD 470 i believe). Then you wait 6 weeks and hope you get called, and then f you get called for an interview then you got to wait to be selected for a job.

Getting the state job is a patience thing but once you get it its pretty good barring the slow work and the fact that you may get paid 6.55 an hour.

This job was actually a little different than the process you described though. They actually advertised the specific position and location, and I applied just like any other job (sent them cover letter + resume + answers to their supplemental questions) The exam occured after I was notified that I "qualified" for the position.

Heh wow, I was actually looking at positions in DTSC a while back. If this doesn't fall through, I was gonna apply for a water resources control eng. with the waterboard.

just got the results back - in the lower end of the qualifying bracket and they want me to come into a panel interview tomorrow

blah they don't give much notice
