Anyone else's parents stuck in the past?

It really pisses me off how untrusting my parents are. They're really deathly afraid of adjusting to our current times. The things they do can be so easily done with the technology that we have today, that I can't comprehend why they don't use these things. They don't even want to learn. They always tell me, you're generation is so spoiled. Yeah, I know we all have access to computers and new technology, but every generation gets something new. I had to learn how to use a computer just like everyone else. I wasn't born with these skills. They didn't teach me how to use a computer in school. I know plenty of people that don't know how to use freakin IE to just get on yahoo or find the local weather.

So anyways, are you, or your parents, stuck in the past?

How old are you/your parents?

Actually, my mom uses her computer all the time. She's upgraded it herself (memory, another hard drive, and a dvd drive), and she networked my sisters computer through a HPNA network. My mom actually knows how to work with DOS, and has been using computers since before I was born :) My mom even upgraded her computer to Windows XP (clean install). My stepdad has about the same knowledge (my mom is always teaching him stuff). She usually can fix things herself, and RARELY calls me for help (She last asked me for help a few months ago because she couldn't find her Tax files in the folder she put them in (I moved them :D ))

If anyone in my family can't use a computer, it's my sister ;)

BTE - my mom is 39 and my stepdad is 33.

I built my parents a computer a few years ago, and when I first got them using it, my dad was completely clueless. My mom wasn't so much, because she uses a computer at work, but my dad is an auto mechanic, so really never used a computer. I had to show him how to do everything, just getting him to open programs was a challenge. Now though, he's on the computer all the time. He checks his sites daily, and is always ordering things online for my race car or his motorcycle.

But god forbid something goes wrong with the computer, then they are calling me wanting me to drive over to fix it!

I used to think my parents were a little old-fashioned.
Then I noticed how old-fashioned other people's parents seemed to be.

And I realized that my parents are pretty progressive for 55.

I'm going to make a dangerous assumption based on your avatar, you are Asian. If so, Asians are more reactionary than many others. They don't like change. They also like to pile guilt on their kids.

I'm older than your dad and I have a hard time getting my kids, 21 and 12, interested in learning more than the most basic computer principles. My house is full of computers.

Some people just aren't interested.

Yes, I make my living in the industry.

My dad's got the sweet PDA, awesome LCD cellphone, and a laptop. =) Although he isn't good with hardware or anything like that he's definitely not stuck in the past. My mom doesn't watch much TV and doesn't use a computer much in free time but she is a corporate secretary and uses a computer at work.

I'm very glad to have parents that are interested in new technology.

I started out with computers when I was about 10. Got my father into it. he went frolm being a donut deliverer (delivers donuts to white hens, 7-11's, etc) to working for one of the biggest and best companies out there. He supports a few major auto manufacturers web sites as well.

$15k a year to 6 figures in less than 3 years. My dad rocks!

My mom can OWN a command line based OS. She has to deal with just typing in commands at a prompt at work everyday. She can't handle a mouse and GUIs...........she would much rather just learn the commands for everything.

My mom can only email and listen to mp3s.

My dad did not know anything, until he bought our first computer in 1991. He actually learned everything by himself, and because he is in the printing business, even created templates for his work on excel. I was impressed and still proud of him!

My sister is like every teens, knows about everything that has to do with downloading, html, messaging etc. hehe..

As for me, I learned most of what I know in uni, by having my own computer. Did not dare to experiment on the only computer at home, since my dad depended on it so much ;)

My mom is 72 and uses a computer daily. She's a little clueless here and there when it comes to the more technical settings and stuff, but that's understandble. I'd say, on average, she's more computer savvy than most of the general population, though.

I can't get her excited about high definition TV, though. But she did just switch to DVD last year.

My 60-year-old mom has been using computers since the 386 days (back when Gateway was a good brand ;) ) and gaming since then too: Kings Quest then, Quake2, Unreal and Return to Castle Wolf now.

My 62-year-old dad finally started using a computer about 4 years ago. He is visually impaired so had to stop playing the shooters after Doom II, he can't see the tiny far-off enemies in newer true-3D games well enough to win.

So nope, my parents aren't stuck in the past. I'm sure it helps though that they read a lot of science fiction in their youth, the world is just starting to look more like those stories now :)

My 71 y.o. mother decided this year to make the plunge and learn to use a computer. Built her one and now she's slowly picking it up. Unfortunately, it's a 2 hr. drive to her house and I'm making the trek weekly.....a new lesson each week. But at least she's trying, which is pretty cool considering her age.

Yeah same here. Not only that they also call sex by wierd indirect phrases, like "That thing which married people are supposed to do" or "That unclean thing which animals do". Pffft.

well my mother is head of a IT center in OR.

But my dad just got a computer about a year ago. But he is learning fast. All he does is send/recieve email and play (prints photo's and has made a calender and tshirt etc) with pictures he takes with his digital camera.

My in-laws suck. I have given them 4 computers in the last 6 years. they keep breaking them and i keep doing tech support. I finally got tired of giving them my old computers (i upgrade at least once a year) and haveing them break them that i told them to buy a Dell. Now i either give the computer to friends or sale em on ebay.

My mom uses a computer quiet a bit and can use it pretty efficiently for a mother, but my dad would press the monitor button and wonder why the computer doesn't start up.

You know, the great thing about this site and forum in particular is that it works for all ages. I'm 42 and have 3 computers lying around the house. The "buttkicker" is mine and only mine, but I gave my wife the P3 and I'm getting my daughter and son to learn more than just chat and Kazaa on the small P2. My son and I whoop it up with UT 2003 and my daughter and I play Warcraft...she likes the little orcs, the peons. She's 10. She's learning Photoshop, Painter 7 and I'm trying to get her interested in Bryce. I'm thrilled to say I'm a dad, but I sure ain't old. If I think about it I might be stuck in the past but I think the present is a blast and the future will be great. sad to hear your parents don't think so too. Why don't you sit your dad down to a game of UT 2003 and kick his butt. I bet he'll love it. that is if your mom doesn't smack him in the head first...Oh and my dad. He's 79 and keeps telling me to get my head out of my @ss and get a Mac. Kinda neat.

Don't get them addicted to the PC... then they'll be like me and have back pains and wrist pains and finger pains and die.
