My IP address (comcast cable modem) has been static for 5 months, and all of a sudden it changed this AM... did this happen to anyone else?

I wouldn't know. Comcast keeps bitching about some kind of outstanding bill in someone else's name that needs to be paid before we can get any kind of service.

Nope, it's been 68.x.x.x for awhile now.

(BTW, check to see if your cap changed ;))

Well, just to clarify, I'm in South FL.

When I first signed up with comcast, I did have my IP changing a lot, but then realized that I hadn't cloned my main machine's MAC into my router. After I did that, life was good. (I figured they must do some kind of hash on the MAC to select an IP) Then today I'm trying to get to my box from work, and it doesn't respond..come home and find my IP changed from 66.176.61.x to 66.176.63.x.

I pretty much don't download anything big, so no idea if the claims about increasing download speed had anything to do with it. Just thought it was curious that my IP would spontaneously change.

Not in a few weeks, no. Last major outage was the storm awhile back.. Other than that, it has just been random 2 hour outages.

well they don't promise a static IP, at least in my area. it hasn't changed in a long time, but it would be within their rights to do so.

when i had pacbell DSL, it changed everytime my router cycled.

Yeah, a really good friend of mine in western delaware county... off the west chester connection runs a Ventrillo voice chat server and between about 6 outages he's had in the last month, he's gone through as many ip adresses. prior to that he'd had the same one for months. If you wanna talk about it, PM me and I'll give you the adresses so you can connect. (Ventrillo is a voice chat system)

Mine seems to change every 4 days or so (that's what my router is showing for a lease time). In fact, it often changes subnets... I have a 255.255.252.0 subnet mask, and I've seen my ip as 12.x.x.x, 24.x.x.x, and once as 67.x.x.x. I guess this means that if I ever manage to get myself permanently banned, the Mods will have a tough time actually getting rid of me. ;)

Nope, mine is the same.

If it's auto assigned by DHCP like it is here.. then all it means is someone grabbed your IP and it had to assign you a new one.

Mine was stable for almost 2 years in the Dallas area, then my router flaked out.

It apparently wasn't there for a DHCP renew, because when it came back up I was on another subnet.

I've had the same address since.

(I think. Lemme telnet into the router... yep. same IP address.)
