Been doing it for almost a year now, and the nights are starting to get to me. Very little interaction with my peers, slow nights, and now winter coming so it will be cold out too. Not sure why but it makes it seems worse working at night when its cold lol.

Unfortunately none of the day guys want to switch to nights so it looks like im stuck for now.

At least we get to watch TV and sleep when nothing is going on though.

jsut wondering if any other ATOT'ers work in a NOC especially night shift, and how you pass your time?
 
WTF!?!?! You get paid to sleep and watch tv on the chance that something might happen in your NOC and you're COMPLAINING about it? What do you do during the day?

Not complianing, and yes it sounds really good but at times can get to you...
 
I've worked for several years in NOC/tech control facilities and have always enjoyed it. Almost always on rotating shifts, but had a set schedule on the last contract. That was nice. It was a very small TCF with lots of freedom. I now work in a NOSC as part of a TOC with a standard rotating schedule. Day shift on this contract is awful, but it is very rewarding.

Where are you working? Details?

I know how you feel - I am never challenged at work and am constantly bored. I'm unsure of what to do - I can't find another job that pays as well as what I have now.

To combat the boredom, I always try to have a magazine or book to read, and I recently bought a DS Lite, which really passes the time.

The Data center is up in northern NJ about 10 minutes drive from the city. Its a very inconspicuous building, with no company marking anywhere. Not sure what other details you were looking for?

Hehe well we dont provide healthcare insurance, strictly prescription drug coverage. But I am sure they play a part in jacking up your premiums anyway 🙂
 
Night shift can be a soulcrusher. Maybe pick up some podcasts, books on tape, et c? Catch up on reading? Take a laptop and development environment and pick up a programming language?

Gameboy?

Podcasts would be great.... Now if I only had an iPod!!!

No seriously though, those are some good suggestions, thanks. I just cant seem to get motivated to DO anything at night for some reason. I have a laundry list of things I *should* be doing, but just dont know when or where to start. It is frustrating.

Sorry for rant.
 
Stupid suggestion - try moving around some. My body temp always bottoms out between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m., and I get lethargic a while before that. Moving around and getting my blood moving helps a lot. Warming up, though, ain't too easy if you're on a raised floor.

I have no iPod, but I do have a cheap MP3 player I got off of w00t last year sometime. It taks an SD card and while it's not iPod cool, it does the job.

Do you like pulp fiction? Maybe some crappy pulp sci-fi/crime/fantasy/et c. would occupy you.
 
Ask your boss to move you, shouldn't he be rotating shifts anyways to make it fair? Of course, nobody will volunteer for graveyard shifts, but if you feel your shift time is unfair, then ask your boss.
 
I work nights maintaing radar systems and love every bit of it. Don't have to worry about the phone, don't have to worry about people. Just me, a couple of other techs, and the equipment. I'm also married with a child and to be honest that's THE ONLY drawback for me on nights, but since my schedule is about 180* from their's it actually works out relatively well. My wife and I don't even have to worry about sharing the car 🙂
 
I did that for about a year and a half. It was rotating shifts so some of that time was during the day. I got pretty burned out on it for the same reasons you mentioned, along with it not being challenging at all. The bosses kept saying wait a little bit longer and we'll have a regular position for you. Heard that for 6 months, got tired of waiting, found another job, indirectly let the bosses know that I had another job and I was going to leave. I got a call the day before I was going to give my notice, and was told that they had the job available for me finally, so that was nice.

We didn't have TV or anything and weren't supposed to sleep, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't dose off every once in awhile. 🙂 Also had the laptop. Watched lots of movies and TV shows and played an ass-ton of Civ2.

Be careful what you wish for. I was NOC for about a year. I couldn't wait to get out of it. ATOT actually kept my sanity. A quiet boring job with nothing to do == insanity. Okay, so I'm a tad pro-active 😀

We dont have rotating shifts here. When I interviewed for the position it was made clear that I would be on the back end night shift (W,Th,F 7p-7a) with no change to days in sight (unless someone quits)

I wasn't saying it is unfair, since I knew what I was getting into when I accepted the position. I was just asking how others working the night shift pass their time/stay sane.
