An ignorant newbie - the most irritating turds on the planet.

WTH are you exactly king of all knowing PC?
You just shot your credibility on this forum, not sure if you had any in the first place with your sorry azz attitude. NFORCE 2 is an excellent solution for many. JOO must be a VIA plant.

"The NF7-S BIOS version we received contained an AGP lock set at 66MHz, but we were unable to find any PCI lock set at 33MHz in this BIOS. We asked ABIT why the AGP lock was included in the NF7-S BIOS but not the PCI lock, and we were basically told that the only reason you don't see a PCI lock in the BIOS is because ABIT doesn't want users fooling around with PCI frequency, especially since it offers virtually no performance gain. We don't have any way of independently verifying ABIT's PCI lock claim ourselves, so take this piece of information as you will."

"The A7N8X BIOS definitely does contain an AGP bus lock at 66MHz. However, what about the PCI bus lock at 33MHz? For this question we headed over to ASUS and asked them what was going on. ASUS's response was simply that they have a PCI bus lock set at 33MHz and that you have nothing to worry about as far as running your devices out of specification while performing FSB overclocking. "

"Even though there's definitely an AGP lock in the 7NJS BIOS, there isn't any visible PCI lock. According to Chaintech though, the 7NJS does indeed lock the PCI bus at 33MHz, there just isn't an option in the BIOS to tinker with it. We have no way of independently verifying this ourselves, so take it for what it's worth. "

They didn't know about Epox, the Leadtek and MSI boards didn't have PCI locks.

Well, THESE companies have been screwing Intel too. Have you heard of anything called "Cold Boot" problem? Do a search on google or yahoo, you can see it spread out from i845D to latest i845PE. No one survived THESE companies, Intel or AMD.

Well overclock this, I think I made myself clear when Epox has AGP and PCI lock feature too. So Epox is the real winner in my book.

1 being Why is ASUS implementing Serial Ata onboard when I can buy a perfectly good PCI card for it down the road WHEN i NEED it.

Oh, really, do you always buy stuff when you NEED it? Tell me when is the last time you ever used a firewire port or USB2.0(not 1.1)? If not, should both of them be got rid of from Epox? The fact is, I am glad I got an Asus. :D Serial ATA is important to me just like Lan port, 6.1 audio, USB2.0 and Firewire. You save your money for an expensive PCI card in the future. If you want your way, go with A7N8X standard version then. Performance wise, A7N8X is much better than Epox on Evan's charts.

Get this clear, Asus A7N8X Deluxe is "high end", Epox is "value buy".

You asked for it BOOOY.
Like i said... i like PLAIN Motherboards.. and these days Plain vanilla boards come with USB 2 and firewire and SOUND. We will no longer see the days of Abit KT7's and just see serial, ps2, parallel ports only.

I use MY FireWire card on DV camera, and Apple Ipod, USB 1.1 on Canoscan 620U.

Seria ATA is great on paper, realitistically I'll wait for the intel ICH 5 to come out, or VIA or whomever. Asus is trying to put the feature that it is upgrade proof. Ohh please. And Asus OVERCLOCKS the CPU from the factory by having a default FSB above 133

IMHO I would buy Epox over Asus anytime, you not only save money but performance and stability with Epox boards is excellent,as for losing your data well anybody that overclocks should have their important data backed up,if you don`t then it`s your fault and your problem not the board/HD in question.

What is point of backup if the data coming out of your harddrive is already corrupted ??? How can you choose good data over bad data on your harddrive ???

When overclocking there`re no guarantees, most people in general don`t overclock,so if you`re going to OC it makes sense to have precautions and backup your data somewhere safe incase things don`t work out the way you plan.Remember OC is not a standard so it`s at the owners risk.

One point, the nForce 2 is the best integrated board available, just look at all the features you get,as for OC it was never made for that purpose so any OC you get out of it is a bonus.

Overclocking is for LOSERS. I love my athlonxp1600+'s performance and I see no reason to overclock...unless someone can prove to me 200+ mhz of cpu speed will drastically help performance.

Hmm... Do you like to run your 1600+ at 1400+ speed? If you don't, then that is similar reason why other people want to overclock it to 1800+ or higher, instead of stock speed. It is that simple.;)

Does EPoX 8RDA+ supports PCI bus locking? And when a 166MHz FSB Athlon overclocked to 200MHz FSB, is that the PCI still running at 33MHz ? Thanks.

That's a pretty strong statement there dejacky. I do believe that overclocking is less important in this day and age as processors and bus systems are faster and way more powerful than in the days of the AMD K5 -> Classic Slot A Athlon (my overclocking heyday). And overclocking can be a fun hobby with very measureable and compareable results. But I'd say it's far from "for LOSERS".

My original post was not a flame bait - This is to the genius with the big mouth on this thread.

I posted my concerns / opinions and I was shot down.

My main concern is the fact that most manufacturers are living in the friggin past on the AMD side...maybe thats why AMD is losing all the money as we speak.

I was planning to get the Barton CPU in the future.
Think about this, whats the difference between running a Tbred "B" at 200mhz now (on an Asus A7N8X) or running a 200mhz Barton in the future...in both cases, the PCI bus is locked on the Asus board ...and perhaps Epox.

What about MSI and Abit? Why didn't Abit just say that their boards support PCI lock in lamens terms? Why should I guess and waste money on their pathetic piece of hardware? Always been a big Abit fan - these guys have disappointed me big this time around.

Its time to jump ship and head to Intel next year. Atleast P4s run smoother, quieter and cleaner.

To people who were offended by my remarks and such, I appologize. Its just frustrating that you think that this is whole situation is OKAY when the only reason to upgrade from a KT333 would be the overclocking and PCI locking bliss of the nForce2. I guess you people have your skewed(screwed) way of justifying this whole situtation...I have mine...and frankly, I'm right.

Take care and happy holidays.

Funny that you should say that, since you yourself are guilty of insulting anyone who dares to present a differing opinion in your thread.

Again, funny that you should complain about compatibility with future chips with regard to AMD... A lot of AMD boards released in the last two-three years are still capable of running recently released CPU's. Can you say the same about Intel chips? You try and squeeze a 423-pin PenIV into a 478-pin socket.
What about MSI and Abit? Why didn't Abit just say that their boards support PCI lock in lamens terms? Why should I guess and waste money on their pathetic piece of hardware? Always been a big Abit fan - these guys have disappointed me big this time around.
You go ahead and buy Asus then! Just remember, overclocking is the hobby of a very limited number of PC users, and therefore overclockability is not the main focus of most manufacturers. While Abit might have started out as an enthusiast's brand, to keep themselves afloat eventually they needed to enter the mainstream market as well, and so the requirements for their boards have shifted from screaming perfomance and rock-solid stability at whatever price, to the same rock-solid stability at more reasonable prices by sacrificing some of that horsepower. Wouldn't you rather have a healthy Abit churning out great quality boards that they can sell in numbers than a bankrupt Abit that wouldn't let go of its performance crown? Abit is incurring heavy losses as it is already. I say, good for them for knowing when to switch profiles. Of course they could still fail to capture a decent enough market share, in which case they will most likely disappear in less than a year.
Its time to jump ship and head to Intel next year. Atleast P4s run smoother, quieter and cleaner.
Whatever suits you.

Really? Personally, I couldn't care less. If something has to be said, it will be said. And if I do get kicked out, then by all means - so that you and everyone else on the boards can go back to your mundane conversations.

Peace.

WOW someone is angry. To each is own, every body has a preference, if we didn't then we would be mindless zombies. Its good that you like certain things about a motherboard, or manufacturer, remember to be open minded.

What's truly absurd is that we even need to argue about whether or not any of these motherboards have a PCI lock or an independent PCI bus speed or whatnot. This is something that we should be told from the manufacturer without having to ask for it or experiment to determine it. It would be like buying a truck to haul a boat, but the manufacturer won't tell you what the towing rating of the truck is. Instead, they just tell you that you'll have to buy the truck and find out for yourself if it will work or not.

Performance wise, A7N8X is much better than Epox on Evan's charts
OK, I'm sorry, I can't let this go. Did you look at the actual numbers? Yes, one bar on a graph was sometimes higher than another...but the DIFFERENCE? 222 vs 223 on Content Creation. 168 vs 171 for Sysmark. 46.2 vs 46.8 for DivX conversion. I could go on and on but you've seen the charts yourself. Yeah, that's a dramatic gap there. C'mon now, let's be realistic.

Bottom line - the reason to buy one nForce2 board over another is because of the features it has. If it has stuff that you won't ever use, why pay more for it? Conversely, if you really want something in particular, buy the board that HAS it. Trying to convince someone that they should buy a board because they should have Serial ATA or whatever, even if they'll never use it, is foolish. Folks are (hopefully) smart enough to know what they want.
so that you and everyone else on the boards can go back to your mundane conversations.
Aw, I'm sorry! Please come back Overclock! Our lives won't be as exciting without you here! Introduce some spark into our otherwise stale lives!

Really, no one's going to take your opinion seriously when you keep mouthing off like a 13 year old who's just angry at the world. Maybe writing angry posts makes you feel better, but trust us, no one's impressed on the other side. I know your answer already: "I don't care if I impress you losers. Go to hell." Right. Then why post here in the first place? Because you like to show off by using big-kid words like "suck ass" and "turd". Oh, and also the infamous "newbie". You might want to go back to playing Diablo 2 on B.net where they speak your language.

I do so love it when people can't take a hint when their attitude isn't warranted and especially not wanted.

Shut up, dude...save your breath. I already appologized in my earlier post. Talk all you want - frankly I couldn't careless about your senile way of thinking. How old are YOU? 75?

Great thread! Sincerely enjoyed it.
I was drawn in by the heading but stayed for the fireworks.

Seriously, I am happy to see so many mature people in this forum.
Perhaps Anandtech can give Overclock This his own forum: for the young and angry.

By the way, I am buying TWO nForce boards and I don't plan on overclocking either.
I have only recently begun posting but have enjoyed reading posts here for awhile.
I am not a newbie, so I can tell that there are a lot of knowledge out here.

Dude, just get an Intel setup and shut up.
If all you are concerned about is a friggin OC then wth did you go AMD in the first place?
You slam mechBgon who is one of the most knowledgeable people on this forum, you have shown nothing but ignorance and disrespect for this forum's members.
You sir are a disgrace to this forum.
