Anyone else unimpressed so far by AvP2?

I recently started playing a little Aliens vs. Predator again, and was surprised at how old school but effective the graphics are in bringing immersive game play. After a recent CGonline article, where the developers basically said that Lithtech has some serious drawbacks they have to overcome, and some very brightly lit screenshots, I'm a little worried that the new game is going to be more of a Halflife wannabee clone, than AvP. Not only that, but what is up with the Alien's homeworld and the "ecosystem" on it? I thought the aliens would have trashed their homeworld long ago and be dormant in pods, but putting the aliens on a food chain, perhaps not even at the top, seems a little bit cheesy to me. Just an excuse to throw in big charging beasts a la Giants: Citizen K? Well, at least you can save. :p

I'll get the game for sure, but I am somewhat dissapointed that the LithTech engine is being used. It's not near as pretty or as fast as the Q3 or Unreal engines in my opinion. The only part of the first AvP that I enjoyed were the Marine missions which again, in my opinion, were the only ones that were scary and fun. The game could do without the other aspects and just be perhaps a real "aliens" game? I also wish the developers would quit trying to recreate the damn movies. How about Marine missions against aliens in jungles, cities, etc. lets use some creativity eh? But no, we'll be fighting on LV426, the Sulocko (sp?), etc. Same old stuff. Blah. But I'll still get it just for that 1/3rd of the game.

Edit> Oh yeah, and the flamethrower in the first game was SO pointless. You dowse enemy in flames and they still keep comming to eat you. Pointless, but cool looking which was probably the entire point of the weapon in the first place. And since when is the Predator virtually impervious to weapons fire? If I recall from the movies, the predator bled which Dutch then further implied in all his infinite wisdom that "we can kill it." OK great, then why does it take two full magazines from a pulse rifle along with some grenades to exterminate his ass? BS. I doubt this will be fixed.

I am pretty skilled at FPSs, but the first AvP kicked my ass to the point it was not fun, and I FleaBayed it lickety-split. I found it really beautiful and scary, and I hope the sequel offers the pluses of the original with more fun gameplay.

Yeah it took me awhile to get quick enough and acurate enough to splatter a charging alien, but once you do, you can smoke those sucka's with no problem. Actually I got good at this game on a laptop using a touchpad! For awhile I used my touchpad for every game (FPS, everything!) I played even multi-player and could compete. Once I finally got my desktop though I sucked again because I wasn't used to using a real mouse. Just a little pointless story I think is cool. Lates.

Yeah, it took a while to get into the groove with the game, I didn't really mind the no save system, especially with the semi randam alien spawn (though marines didn't spawn randomly for predators and aliens though) I eventually beat all the levels on standard, and many of them on directors cut.

I enjoyed the Predator missions for the feeling of invulnerability against humans, though the ones involving mostly aliens sort of sucked. I enjoyed the Alien campaign, too, after I beat that #%^@! first level.

The flamer was pretty useless, but if I didn't have a smartgun, it was nice to use against facehuggers in a pinch, and back off while they fry.

I was bored once and started looking up some Aliens "lore" on the net, didn't find a good site that detailed novels or the pen and paper game, but evidentally, the aliens got to earth and trashed the hell out of it. The alien wars to kick them out of New York City would make a much more interesting game than whatever these geniuses are coming up with with their "alien homeworld" theme.

Then again, they might surprise us. At least Fox doesn't have control now.

Yeah I think the no-save option made the game better. The further you went into a level the more stressful it got! I know there's a patch now for AvP that allows mid-level saves, but I think Soldier of Fortune had the best save system yet. You just picked how many saves you got per level at the beginning of the game (if you don't know) and go with that for the rest of the game. Pretty cool.
