The economy has me really really concerned. Partly because I work in an investment bank, which so far, hasn't had any mass layoffs and I currently work in a revenue generating department. But I'm still a bit fearsome.. enough to keep me up at night at times. It doesn't help that I don't enjoy my job at all.

My only outstanding debt is a mortgage from condo purchased 6 months ago. Reason I bought it was that I got a good deal and if worse came to worse, I'd be able to rent it out and cover just about my entire mortgage. Furthermore, I have a room-mate who pays me rent+half-utilities.

Now, if $hit did hit the fan and I stopped receiving all income tommorrow including my room-mate's, I currently have around 5 months of living expenses saved up (that is mortgage+minimal expenses). This obviously increases every month and with the tax-returns and additional income next year, I project that I will have a full year of living expenses saved up. This does not take into account the mortgage insurance I have that covers the mortgage for a year in case of job loss.

I've seriously cut back on leisure expenses. I haven't bought new clothes in like 3 months. I've been trying to do a better a job at cutting back on my gaming/gadget expenses. In fact, I am going to try not to buy games in the near future. The only thing that has me worried is Christmas :(.. last year, I spent $1.5k during Christmas.

I've been trying to see if I could cut anywhere else. I'm thinking of getting rid of cable but that would not save much because of the package deal.

I've also been updating my resume and applying to new jobs just in case.

Anyone else have any tips or want to share their experiences of how they are coping with the economy?

Instead of entertainment like movies, Starbucks, sporting events, etc I've been trying to just have "fun" with girls. Unfortunately girls aren't that easy to come by.

I am spending far, far more than ever before on tech items.

However, I am spending less on eating out, alcohol, and various subscription services.

You win.

Honestly, sex costs somewhere between $1 and free if you are doing it right, and its tons of fun.

well, it has affected me. Instead of looking for a job in 2009, i decided to prolong my time not working and start looking for a job 2010 when the economy was better. For now i'll just sit around, travel, and enjoy not having a job. :)

honestly, the economy has not caused any hardship or change in my life. the downturn dropping the price of gas has been nice, it means i can drive my CJ more then i drive my TJ, and i'm not so worried about mileage.

I was being quite frugal before things tanked. I have a decent amount in my checking. Dropped more than I would have liked due to car reg. and insurance being due this month.

Also just blew about $600 for some suspension mods on my car. First splurge in a long while.

Left my job in August (bad move). Was lucky to find a temp gig with decent pay but that could be over as early as March and I'm not sure what to do after that. Could get scary. Luckily I live at home so I don't have to worry about rent or food.

On your cable bill, drop the TV and keep internet. Tell them your local telephone company is running a special for DSL for $25/month or whatever it is and that you want to drop down to just internet for the same price. I had TV and internet for $60 for a year. The year ran out, price went up to $100. I called to cancel it and keep just internet. My local phone company had a $30/mo special. Mediacom gave me the internet for $20/mo+ $15 since all I was going to have was internet. The only thing blocking TV is a filter on the drop from the pole to the house. Not meaning anything by this, but since you are in a condo, the filter would be installed in a box on the side of the building.

Cable companies are always desperate to retain customers, especially right now. The most they can tell you is no.

No changes.

I don't really have much else to cut out of the budget before digging into stuff like electricity, food, or Internet.

Which must be why TWC bumped up their rates for cable TV by $5/month. :p

I have dropped basic cable, and upped my Internet speed by 9x, for a net savings of $10/month.
That wasn't because of the economy, but just because of a general need to save a bit of money, and because cable TV just wasn't worth it for the few shows I would watch.

i've taken care of a lot of the parasitic draws on my bank acct and credit cards... nickel and diming here and there, $15 usenet subscription that hasn't been handy in months, $2 grabit search, $5-10 credit 'protection' BS added to my bills, other junk.

Trying to reduce monthly bills by canceling unnecessary ones and using others less (ex. lower thermostat to 64). Considering packing my lunch at work a few days a week, to save on food.
