Anyone else tired of the 2' long receipts you get these days?

It seems all the big box stores, electronic as well as home improvement now insist on printing receipts that are about 2' long. Always with some craptacular phone survey crap so you can enter for the 1 in 1,000,000,000 chance to win a gift card of some sort.

Add to that the rebate receipt that has the entire library of congress printed in tiny letters describing all the reasons they are going to deny you your rebate.

Then of course you get a gift receipt printed.

I leave the store with one small box and a sackful of receipt tape.

Lame-ass rant I know, I was just going through some Home Depot receipts for work and noticed how cumbersome they are.

I went to subway tonight and got a receipt that was about a foot long, I thought I was back at Best Buy but realized it was 2 feet too short.

My favorite part of working at Best Buy was when someone would buy a computer and it would print out *SIX* different receipt/rebate forms, all 1-2 feet long. Then it would print out all the extra copies of the receipt to be mailed in with those forms.

Oh wait, I wanted to stab my head with a screwdriver every time I had to print those out and explain how every rebate worked so my customers could get their money back. I felt so bad for the customers, since I assume half of them never sent them in or were denied because of some stupid fine print that they didn't have an electron microscope to read it with. I am so glad I have a real job now and don't have to work in the retail environment anymore.

When I worked at sears I would fold our receipts before handing them to the customer(Fold twice) so when they got it it was a reasonable 4" or so in length. Usually they weren't too bad but we did have times where promotions were running and such that they were a bit ridiculous

Hate the 3ft receipt. Also, don't forget to show your receipt at the door - Fry's has snipers on the roof!!!

Really, its more than just a little offensive to be basically treated like a shoplifting suspect after dropping a couple hundred at the checkout.

I don't think you have to comply. Just ignore them.

Inside their store, you have to comply. Once you step outside, it's another story.

why do you have to comply? it's your reciept, and your goods once the cash have traded hands.

No you do not. Store security has no legal right to hold you in the store. All they can do is try to get you to "willingly" stay by making you think you have to.

The other bad part about the receipts is they will fade away really quick.

Thats exactly what I was about to say.
What law in what state requires me to comply with them?

I usually just walk straight past them. If there is a line, my time is worth more than their stupid pink highlighter mark. No hassles or anything. If they ask "Can I check your bag?", I just say no and keep walking. Those goons can hold me when I steal something, but otherwise, I completed the transaction.

While I agree that alot of the length is ridiculous - half of our length is related to our return policy which is spelled out in every single little detail so we can point to it and say "Its not our job to inform you about the return policy (If you had asked we would have told you) and it IS explained to you in every detail you could care to know about on the receipt."

God help you if you pay in part with a gift card, get financing on your purchase, while purchasing another gift card and decide to sign up for cable service. Each one adds about 3" to the length of the reciept

No, even if you steal something they cannot (legally) hold you.

No? Then what about all those stories of shoplifters getting tackled to the ground and get stepped on to hold them down?

There are so many different scenarios and the laws vary per state that it is impossible to give you a definite answer.

In some cases, as long as security sees you take the item and does not lose sight of you (very important, because if they do, you could've dumped the item and then the store would look bad for confronting you), they may be able to detain you.

Also, some security guards may actually be off-duty police officers, which adds another complication to the mix.

And other times, employees/patrons go vigilante and wind up getting in a lot of trouble.
