Yes very tired that nobody mentions the fact that all his accomplishments required working with a mostly Democrat majority congress that had no problem overriding his vetoes 9 times.

The left has as much irrational hatred for Reagan as the right does for Bill Clinton.

When I was a kid growing up, I played hockey, and every April we would have an awards dinner of sorts. One year in particular I got up to go the bathroom, and in the hallway adjacent to the bathroom was a television. As I walked by, all the servers and most of the adults were plastered to the television.

President Reagan was giving a speech on our bombing of Libya. The presence he commanded through that television set a template in my young mind of what a President should be.

As an adult, I've come to learn of the scandals and poor economic policies that also categorized his legacy. But he was the right leader at a pivotal time in American history, and had many redeeming qualities.

For all his scandals and faults in policy, Reagan was the Great Communicator. He was a true statesman who could bring the People together with a positive message. His was a vision of hope and greatness, not fear and division. He tore down walls, not built them up.
For better or for worse, we could use a leader like that today, but there don't seem to be any in the running.

Mentioning that just opens up the door to how the Republican Congress did much the same thing to Obama.

I'd love to see Regan with a democratic Congress that is equivalent to today's Republican party and see just how well he can tear down walls. Regan wasn't successful because people bent to his will, he was successful because people were willing to work with him. He didn't have a party working against him at every turn with seemingly no rational to it. If anyone doubts that then simply look at the issues he had to deal with and how he dealt with them and then think about how this Congress would react if it was Obama instead of him.

President Kennedy signed the bill that created the community mental health centers for mental patients to receive treatment in their home communities in 1963. Reagan just followed up on our liberal idea.

Maybe if you were an adult then you would have seen how much long term damage he did to the country. His cutting and running in Beirut after the marine barracks burning was often cited by bin Laden as proof USA is a paper tiger and would roll over when things got difficult.

Also Reagan should have been impeached after Iran-Contra came to light. The fact that he was not, and Bill Clinton was impeached for a hummer little more than a decade later is mind blowing. And the same people who worship Reagan think Hillary is an arch criminal for not following email protocols. Go figure.

In retrospect (especially after GWB) Reagan wasn't that bad a President, maybe average who caught some huge lucky breaks (the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union and inflation finally burning itself out) which made many think he was better than he was. Also in retrospect I'd rate Nixon higher than Reagan and I absolutely loathed Nixon at the time.

Thoughtful post but I guess it is all a matter of perspective. Iran Contra is probably insignificant relative to the black ops and CIA programs we don't even know about. Narcos is my favorite show right now, and it amazes me the messes America made the world over in pursuing foreign policy that perhaps was sensible at the time within the insanity of the Cold War. I think Reagan gets a pass for navigating America through it, for better or worse.

Reagan certainly does not get a pass for his policies wrt the Cold War. He committed war crimes in El Salvador and Nicaragua, plain and simple. He committed treason with his arms sales to Iran. Reagan was pure filth but with minty fresh breath.

Lets not forget that it was his CIA that was also bringing crack to black ghettoes.

Because Republicans love bring up the 4 killed in Benghazi and ignore the 250 killed in Beirut and Reagan left the Marines unarmed.

Good read on Iran Contra. Not surprising that Congressional hearings and oversight came into play only after some one screwed up and got caught. Article didn't mention anything about crack.

Feel free to learn some more history.

The love for Regan is purely emotional. Hell I even used to like him but the more I learn about history and his actions the less I like him.

The CIA creating the crack epidemic and participating/encouraging it's smuggling into the USA was a black urban myth back in the '80s, along the lines of multiple shooters on JFK/Obama born in Kenya/etc.

Speaking of birthers I heard a Trump apologist on CNN (I think) over the weekend. He claimed that birtherism originated with a memo written by someone associated with the 2008 Hillary campaign (very loosely affiliated per the host) so Trump running with that crazy theory was really Hillary's fault. You gotta love the BS those PR folk can sling while sounding earnest.
