Anyone else think that our justice system is screwed?

I have had my experiences with the police, the courts and jail. I can honestly say that the whole thing is a big joke.

The police are supposed to be protecting and serving the community. Too often they are turned into tax collectors. They are also given a set of laws to enforce that are completely ridiculous. People see the police as the enemy because at any time, any member of society could be taken to jail for one charge or another. This also gives some cops a severe power trip. They know they can alter your future with one decision.

The courts are where your guilt or innocence is supposed to be decided. That is so far from what they have become. Once you are charged with a crime, the courts just want you to plead guilty and get out of their hair. Prosecutors don't have the time to worry about guilt or innocence and judges don't really care. From what I have seen, you are considered guilty once you get in front of either of them.

I laugh when I hear people saying, "That guy needs to go to jail!" Most times a person will only be in jail a matter of hours after getting arrested. If the courts do give him jail time, its nothing like what the sentence is. Even then, work release is always an option. So a person serving a year actually gets 9 months and only has to be in jail for 10 hours of the day.

The whole system is just one big tax collection agency. Imagine what would happen if it was decided that courts couldn't impose fines anymore. That they had to actually give a real punishment.

There are two justice systems, one for the rich and one for the poor. You only get fair consideration if you can hire a good lawer.

so on one hand you're calling the system a tax collection agency, and on the other you're bitching about how too many people are being sent to jail, which is actually a huge drain on the public coffers.

1 + 1 = 3?

DUI laws are a joke. They're main purpose is to generate revenue for the local PD and MADD whose goal has changed from preventing drunk driving to alcohol prohibition.

I never complained about the number of people being sent to jail. I complained that the people who do get sent to jail, don't usually serve their sentence.

Wow, that's quite a leap. How exactly do you make the jump from flawed system to no system? Whatever happened to the intermediary steps like "different system" or "fix the system".

Because that's how the government presents it.

"Do you want criminals walking the street?!?!"
Aren't they already???

"Well...umm..."
Judge and prosecutor jump in their BMW's and run off to Mexico.

i have to agree to a point. 1st DUI's are all about money and thats it. you get a big fine, pay an attorney a lot of money and some Community service. sure you lose your license for 6 months but you get a work permit. Recently IL changed it so you have to get a machine that you blow into before you start the car. it has a monthly rental of $80-150

now the 2nd you actually get in trouble.

i also agree MADD has gone overboard. .08 is to low. many hit .08 and are not even close to being impaired to drive. Also they have pushed the laws to change what is a "driving" to nail more people. now just standing near the vehicle with keys will get you a DUI.

not to mention the diffrence between white collar and blue collar crimes (wich also falls under rich/poor i soppose). a guy who steals a few grand worth of items gets nailed and in jail for 10 years. and a guy who steals billions gets 5 years in a min security prison.

I'm not a criminal so I don't worry too much about that. I'm considering going into law enforcement as well.

What I'd like to know is how lawyers made the leap from trying to get someone a fair trial to trying to get their client off in any way possible.

You have never committed a crime? Never sped, smoked weed, drank more than 2 beers and then drove, swore within earshot of a child, punched someone who deserved it, been disorderly?

Nice to see that you care so much about the well-being of your fellow citizens. You'll make a great cop.

Ok, you got me. I have actually been "in trouble" however I had a certain advantage that got me out of trouble.

I do agree that some of the laws are flawed but considering I might apply for the local PD I have to convert my thinking to be in line.

I was being sarcastic/argumentative. I realize there is much more to law enforcement and not everything is black and white.

To protect and to serve is the motto and I agree with that.

heh many stations are takeing the slogan/motto "to Protect and To serve" off everything and replacing it with something like "to serve X county (or city)"

since the US courts have ruled that they are not there to protect you or your property.
