I have had my experiences with the police, the courts and jail. I can honestly say that the whole thing is a big joke.
The police are supposed to be protecting and serving the community. Too often they are turned into tax collectors. They are also given a set of laws to enforce that are completely ridiculous. People see the police as the enemy because at any time, any member of society could be taken to jail for one charge or another. This also gives some cops a severe power trip. They know they can alter your future with one decision.
The courts are where your guilt or innocence is supposed to be decided. That is so far from what they have become. Once you are charged with a crime, the courts just want you to plead guilty and get out of their hair. Prosecutors don't have the time to worry about guilt or innocence and judges don't really care. From what I have seen, you are considered guilty once you get in front of either of them.
I laugh when I hear people saying, "That guy needs to go to jail!" Most times a person will only be in jail a matter of hours after getting arrested. If the courts do give him jail time, its nothing like what the sentence is. Even then, work release is always an option. So a person serving a year actually gets 9 months and only has to be in jail for 10 hours of the day.
The whole system is just one big tax collection agency. Imagine what would happen if it was decided that courts couldn't impose fines anymore. That they had to actually give a real punishment.
