Anyone else think that Granholm will be the next governor kicked out of office?

I normally try not to focus on the negative, but how can she remain in office? I believe it was in '06 when she told us that in 5 years we would be "blown away". Well we are almost half way there and the state is in even worse shape than when she gave that speech. Unemployment is well over 10.5%, companies are closing their doors every day and we all know about the Big 3.

It looks like even the state Chamber of Commerce is sick of her. They are questioning why she hasn't done anything to fix the phone lines or website for unemployment. If you know that over 10% of your state's population is going to be using that service, wouldn't you want to make sure it was working? (link for reference)

Michigan is failing quickly and Jenny doesn't seem to even notice.

Update 1/26:
It looks like she finally got the memo about all the problems with the unemployment system. This is after how many months/years its been failing? No actual changes yet....just "plans" to make changes

Hmm..

Manufacturing is getting brutalized across the country.

Michigan has historically relied heavily on Manufacturing.

Its hard to figure why Michigan is struggling right now!

In other words, the Governor has little to nothing to do with the unemployement levels. Its a consequence of Michigan's heritage. And it'll take time for that to change.

I am a dem from Michigan and do feel Granholm is in over her head. Not that I think republican alternatives are necessarily better, but she is just not the person for the job.

wait raising taxes causes businesses to flee :Q

seriously though she shouldn't be kicked out of office, you get what you voted for--you picked a taxer for governor enjoy it and learn next election

don't feel too bad we (WI) have doyle and are in the same boat as you

this is why we need an IQ test for voting or anyone on the government dole doesn't get a vote

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been about 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: '>From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.
Alexander Fraser Tytler (1747?1813)

EDITED:
basically the same as Tyler but from one of our founding fathers:
When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

I realize that we (the state, not me) voted her into and kept her in office. I would love to think that it was some kind of fraud over in Detroit but even if that's true, its in the past.

I just don't get how she can basically ignore all the people that are struggling. The unemployment phone lines being down is just the last straw. There are offices that people can go to, but the news said that there have been 80+ people waiting there when they open in the morning.

I wish I could talk to her for five minutes and find out what's going through her head. Find out if she even knows how bad it is for so many of us. Find out if she even cares...

I am sure that she knows how bad it is. Such issues are reported all the time. She can see those statistics.

It takes time to turn an economy around; Michigan will not be able to do it alone and the interdependence on the auto industry makes it difficult for those that hold dreams of a recovery to work for a change.

One can attempt to recover and allow people to be hurt, or penalize those that are doing well to protect those that are in bad shape. The resources do not exist to do both.

Michigan has been failing for years, since 2001 AFAIR. There have been a few similar posts regarding JG and I have still as of yet not found any reason to suspect that she is responsible for the troubles facing the big three or the decline in manufacturing. That said, I think it is unconscionable that the UA phone lines have been buggered for so long now. I realize they were probably never designed to handle so many calls but still...

I hear an online version of MARVIN is in the works and all I have to say is, why the hell wasn't something like that rolled out years ago?

Even South Carolina with its 'new' economy is having a lot of problems these days.

Not sure if there are any states that are not suffering due to the economic slow down.

No doubt that Michigan has a lot of problems and that they are not doing a good enough job to solve them, but I wouldn't lay all the blame at her feet.

Michigan needs to cut taxes and make itself more attractive to businesses, but before they can do that they need to cut spending and social welfare and that is a VERY hard thing to do.

I guess you are right. I know that focusing more on the medical field is starting to bear fruit. I also heard that more movies are going to be filmed here because of the huge tax breaks we are giving them.

Its just hard to get past the fact that so many people close to me are struggling so bad. I am used to struggling, but people with what used to be very good jobs are hurting just as bad.

There's always a desire to blame someone, ANYone, in tough times like these, and obviously being Governor makes her an easy target.

I'd say we got ourselves into this mess back in the 80s and 90s by not thinking ahead and realizing that tying ourselves so strongly to the success or failure of the autos could eventually bite us. Had we started diversifying things back then, we might already be bearing some of the fruit from these newer industries that are just now starting to take shape in MI..

It'll get better.. Its just going to be tough for awhile until that happens..

Mere incompetence, if that in fact exists here, is no real grounds for removal for office. But a resulting unpopularity over lack of results is a reason for her not being re-elected in the next election.

If anyone wants to talk removal from office they better be able to show blatant corruption or a nice juicy sex scandal.

So in MHO, this thread is somewhat a bunch of hot air.

Moving away if you're a renter. Homeowners can't sell their homes here. The house next door to me has been for sale for over 5 years. People are forced to walk away from their homes and try to start over when they find work in other states. If they are lucky enough to get a job that pays well enough, the breadwinner lives out of state and the rest of the family remains in Michigan. There was an article in the paper about these types of living arrangements.

Despite rapidly decreasing home values, property taxes in the township I live in will be going up 4.4% this year. I'll be paying 4.4% more for a house that's value dropped approximately 15% in 2008 alone.

Her idea of stimulating business is to lower electric rates for business and dump an 11% increase on homeowners. People are losing their jobs, taking pay freezes or in a lot of cases cuts and our ignorant Governor thinks the best plan of action is to increase the costs of the people in this state. It's Democratic thinking at its height of idiocy.

She was ineffective in her first term, she's a disaster in her second. I was so hoping Obama was going to tap her for his cabinet and carry her away.

And have her idiocy be applied on a national level? Thank you Obama for not making that mistake!

This is so very true.

I understand that she isn't 100% to blame, but at some point doesn't she have to accept some responsibility? If the state was doing great, she would be on podiums all over the place taking bows. Now that we have sunk so far into the crapper...its not her fault?

So it looks like the finally got the memo about how bad things are for so many of us. Of course she hasn't actually done anything yet, just acknowledged that there is a problem.

I'm not sure I understand the premise of this thread. Granholm is term limited and will not be able to run again for Governor. While she has been a dismal failure as Governor, she hasn't committed any acts which would be grounds for impeachment.

What most of you nitwits can't seem to grasp is that there is very (VERY) little incentive for manufacturers to stay in the United States. Manufacturing has been jumping ship from Michigan at an explosive rate since the 70's (and probably earlier). With the economic "downturn" this is becoming more and more true because now quality and American workmenship isn't even worth considering.

I love when people say that raising taxes on business scared them away or that union's are too demanding and scare them away. The fact of the matter is that the companies don't give a fuck about you except that you need their product. There is a lot of wake up calls that are needed in this country. Until we start putting huge restrictions on imports and completely taking away tax support to companies that ship all their jobs over to third world countries there will continue to be a huge gap in manufacturing jobs.

Wake up morons.

The premise is that she has done nothing to help the residents of the state in any way. While I don't know of anything that she has done that would be an obvious reason for impeachment, she has basically stood by and watched her state fall apart. For people that aren't stuck here, its hard to explain how bad of shape the state really is in.

Consider this more of a rant thread than anything.

Personally I say good riddance to them. We should be supporting companies that are willing to support our country. All aid and grants from AMERICAN tax payer money should be removed from companies that take jobs away from our country.

Why should we support them? Let them see what a "free market" actually is. Our problem is that we don't (as consumers) demand enough from the producers and therefore we let them walk all over us. We need someone with a pair to actually stand up to them and we need to quit bailing them out when they fail.

Life sucks... learn to deal with it. If they crumble in their own corruption and mess than we shouldn't reward them. Someone else should be allowed to come along and fill the void. It helps maintain competition and allows the consumer to dictate the quality of their products.

We are putting all the blame in the wrong places... because in the long wrong it is OUR FAULT. We let greed control the system and relied on it to make our lives easy. Now the shit has hit the fan and it is time to blame everyone else... (the government, the unions, the investors, the workers, everyone). This is our (the consumers and the voters) fault.

Just pay attention to what businesses and corporations are doing... they are circling their wagons and getting ready for the long winter. They will survive; they have the money and the will. And if things keep getting worse, Mark my words the time of the "Company Town" could easily return. Don't be surprised if industry comes back but in the form of basically indenture servitude.

You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...
