Back in the day, fileplanet used to be the place i would always go to get any file of any kind, but now i absolutely despise going there. I mean, its bad enough having waiting lines, but the fact that many companies now use fileplanet only to distribute files, it makes it annoying as all heck. especially when the lines in OFF-PEAK times are at the minimum 30 minutes. and when something big like the c&c renegade demo or half-life patch comes out, you can expect those waits to jump up to near five hours! jeez that makes me mad. and then they want me to shell out more money (im paying enough for internet, thank you) to get faster downloads! i mean, paying for a useful website like anandtech is one thing, but faster game downloads?! anyone else feel the same way? Um, they are just trying to pay for bandwidth, which is very very expensive. yes it's thorooughly annoying but you can't expect companies to just lose money so you can download your half life patch without any waiting.

grabed this from another website:

"Fileplanet recently started their "Personal Server" concept. Don't want to pay? No problem. Sit in line. Or pay a few bucks a month and download at screamingly fast speeds. People are bitching. Again people are idiots. For our server we're paying $250 a month for 15 gigs of bandwidth. Fileplanet has transferred 35,810 gigs in the last 7 days. That's something like $500,000 for hosting. Just for that site. In the last 7 days. (Now mind you, they're probably paying less just because they'll have their own high speed lines coming in... But not that much less.) Of course they're also paying for people to design and keep the site up, etc. I don't think $6 a month is much to ask, but that's just foolish me, who doesn't mind paying people for goods and services, even on the interweb"

But really though.. personally I wouldn't pay for fileplanet.. but I never use it anyways.. it does tick me off a bit waiting in line, but I can see the reason behind it. I don't really feel like paying for files that I can get off of another website for free. I would suggest that you try out filemirrors.com and search for a mirror to the file your trying to download, usually works great for me.

Well, yes it does suck to wait in line to download files. It sucks some developers, publishers and web sites put exclusive stuff like demos on FP. It sucks FP is becoming a file monopoly on the net.

But bandwidth isn't free. We can always purchase priority service from FP if we find it valuable enough. And on that last note there really isn't anything on FP that's important. Not yet anyway.

The only thing that really does irk me a bit, though, is the demo issue. Publishers reap benefits from demos in many ways: free beta testing and free promotion. Yet if FP gains a monopoly on game demos, people will actually have to pay to become beta testers, pay for the priviledge of being advertised to.

Kami, ehh, that's a grey area. Valve does have a commitment(even if it isn't on paper) to try to support the game by releasing patches to fix things. The fact that they can't deliever these patches without hassle doesn't make that support look good. Besides, if they really wanted to go about it, use Steam to move the patches, not only would it be a good test, but it would get the word out.

well i do know that bandwidth is expensive as all hell, and im not saying they should have speedy downloads for free, all im sayin is that im pissed theyve become like a monopoly as jellybaby said, and that if a demo or other file comes from only one source, and that source is fileplanet, it tends to touch a nerve a little bit.

With a personal server, I get speeds consistently at 400k downloading. With that, I'm content with my few bucks a month.

I know what you mean. I know full well that bandwidth isn't free and the hosting companies shouldn't be expected to foot the entire bill when they're serving up files, but you do have to admit it's getting kind of ridiculous. If you're a serious gamer then you're probably fine with paying a few dollars a month to get demos, patches, new levels, etc.., but for someone like me it just doesn't make any sense. I don't play that many games any more, but there are still times when I feel the urge to kill something. I really don't feel like paying money just so that I can download a demo or download the latest patch to half-life. These things should be hosted right off the companies site. Since they're making money off the game, then it only stand to reason that they host the file.

The real problem is how big files are any more. I remember nearly having a fit when I installed Kings Quest 5 (I think it was 5) on my 286 and it took a whopping 9 MB. I was in shock. I actually had to delete a couple of programs of my hard drive just so that I could install this beast. Then I remembered reading that another game was coming out that was going to take 18 MB!!!!!! Who would have thought that today we'd have device drivers that were bigger than full games were 10 years ago.

Some genious out there needs to invent a new compression algorithm or find a way to keep game sizes small so that we won't have to worry about all these bandwidth problems. Just think if the patches were only a few megabytes....almost anyone would be able to host the file and you wouldn't have to worry about exceeding your bandwidth limit.

Meh... I don't think its all that bad. yeah the wait can be bothersome at times... but hey... they have everything.

Here's my idea....
A bunch of us "cheapies" go in together and buy one account (say about 6-8 of us) and share a user name and password and account and all. There is no way that we'd always be DLing at the same time. What do you think? I know of some people that do this.

Waiting in line sucks, but as some people already said, bandwidth is expensive. If you cant find a mirror, I guess you just have to wait it out.:(

ehh... as much as thats a good idea (i remember wishing for something just like that), it appears that the only solution we are currently coming up with and probably continue to do so in the future, is simply to increase the speed at which you download that huge file.

6 bucks isn't too much to pay for, but I rather if a few sites banded together and offered packages like you can get with cable channels. So at least you can benifit from several sites. This would be a much better value imho

Waiting is a sacrifice I'm willing to make because of the economics. If there was another competing file server, they'd eventually have to do the same. Look at all the file servers to have gone down in the last few years: GameSpot, GameCenter, 3DFiles..........

How much does bandwidth really cost? I'm getting 12GB per month at Cyberwings for $10/yr.

35810 x 4 (per month) = 143240GB per month
143240GB/12GB=11937 Cyberwings I6 accounts
11937 x [$10 (I6's cost)/12 (to get monthly cost)] = $9947.50

Or just do their Reseller Plan #2 which includes 40GB of transfer for $20/month.

Not anywhere close to $500,000.

P.S. How hard is it to type 'Counter Strike patch download' in Google and select a site different than Fileplanet?

when i tried to get the latest CS patch for my bro (he was not home but i know he plays it), i had to wait in line for 10 HOURS!

after IE crashed and i just lost it and started to punch my computer case (1 minor dent in the case), i went to zeroping.com and i got the file with no wait and i was getting like 90kb/s which is pretty good considering how many other people are downloading the same thing.

Not anywhere close to $500,000.

Cyberwings works on the premise that not everyone is using their full bandwidth, and that peak hours for many sites come at different times. They probably don't saturate their 10mbps connections, but I can't say.

However, here's some math on your numbers:

2592000 seconds in a month (30 days, 3600 seconds per hour)
143240000 mbytes/month.
143240000/2592000=55mbytes/second
55MBytes/sec*8=442mbits/second.

442mbps is closest to an OC12, 622mbps. You'll need more bandwidth for peak times, but let's just leave it at an OC12. $500k/month sounds about right for an OC12 loop and port.

I love Fileplanet, and Im happy to pay a little jack for a personal server. Its so sweet not having to wait for DLing, and the personal servers are SO fast.

$10 to Anandtech Forums, $6 to Fileplanet another $20 for Gamespot and IGN; how about some web based e-mail service? I have a better idea, why don't we just give everyone our credit card number and they can help themselves.

It's perfectly fair IMHO. As indicated in some of the replies above, who do ya think pays for the downloads? It's not just your ISP account that pays for it you know.
I have Winbatch running to monitor the status of the Fileplanet window - when it says it's ready, Winbatch 'virtually' presses the right buttons. Works for me.

By the way, buy Winbatch. For anything. I love it.
