yeah, many british comedies don't bother anymore, maily because they're not blatant puns. I think a lot of the problem in the US are people are a little bit slow and need to be prompted when to laugh...

British comedies aren't funny. I think you want them to be funny so you can feel like more of an intellectual when you 'get' their 'jokes'.

I suspect that you don't 'get' the 'jokes' as they surpass your intellectual capacity. I can't find Japanese jokes funny because I simply cannot understand them; similarly, you don't find Brit comedies funny for the same reason. Do bear in mind that English language differs from the US dialect, so there may be language barriers impeding your understading.

Out of interest, which comedies do you have in mind?

The Office isn't funny and neither is Ali G.

But I think it's funny because you seem to feel superior to people just because you 'get' jokes that are on TV, while others don't or just don't care.

The Office might be the worst sitcom I've ever seen.

are we talking about the US or UK version?

Laughtracks suck, yes, but they do not make or break a show. Seinfeld had one, but most people can overlook that fact and still like the show.

And props to Arrested Development. It is one of the best shows on TV.

The US version, but I'm sure you were talking about the UK version. I just really dislike the show so I had to say that. :p

How the fvck did the animators draw fast enough in front of a live studio audience?

The worst one is/was the Planets Funniest Animals... The host was a moron and the show sucked, but the laugh track made it compeltely unwatchable.

The US version does suck. The UK version is sheer genius.

It's been quite a while since I've watched a show with a laugh track. My tastes lean toward dramas (especially humorous dramas such as Boston Legal). I will also watch comedies well-written enough that they don't need laugh tracks (such as The Office which I have on DVD).

well put it this way, laugh tracks are ok when the show is funny. and grating when its obviously not.
