I've gotta lean toward DefRef here. The problem is that this board is filled more predominantly with hardcore/avid gamers. That is not the population that Spore was marketed/geared toward. I enjoy Spore BECAUSE it's so simple, it's a nice easy change of pace from more intense games, but it's hardly something at which to marvel.

Yup - SPORE is of the same genre as the SIMS franchise - a franchise that most hard core gamers despise. :)

I liked the sims. My friend built a sims house on my computer years ago and made his family in it, i shot some fireworks into the air and then saved the game before they landed, he loaded up the game the next day clicked about a bit and sudenly his house was burning in flames, fucking hillarious!! It was a really fun game for anyone. I dunno what a hardcore gamer is exactly but im not a casual gamer thats for sure, so although the sims was great and i had a blast with it (not just malicious things but actually doing the whole job family thing as well) i still didnt like spore.

Well, in a country that has Deerhunter version 509812:Bambi's revenge on the store shelves its not surprising that a non-original game gets great reviews.

Due to ratings inflation, 91% is actually pretty terrible. Average games are 98%. Below 97% is generally garbage. Good games start at 99.5% and the best come up to 99.9%.

It's a fun game that has lots of replay value and is quite relaxing. I agree with Vrolok; it's nothing to go nuts over and marvel at, but it is certainly not the horrible piece of shit people seem to think it is.

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, I don't know what people consider a 'hardcore' or 'avid' gamer, but I like most of the games other people on this board like, so don't try to chastise me for not being 'hardcore'. YES I've played through Deus Ex, PS:T, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1 & 2, and all the other 'OMG AT PC GAMING LOVES THESE' games.

And guess what?
I like Spore.

I bought it and played it. I really tried to like it. I wasted an hour or two messing with the creature creator. But when I tried to play the game, I got bored in about 10 minutes. There's just nothing there.

Enemies either roll over and die or completely destroy you. There is nothing in between, no challenge or excitement or strategy.

Also, forecasts by experts predict that next year's inflation is going to mean game ratings of 99.9% will now be average. A good game will only have a rating of 99.995% or higher with exceptional games at 99.997% or higher. By the turn of the next century, if there isn't a hundred 9's after that decimal point it's best not to bother even looking at the title of that game. Make sure you count all those 9's though, because you'll be sorry if you end up with 99 9's instead of 100 9's.

Been a while since I played a pc game, played spore on my budies laptop for a while and I gotta say that this game is quite the letdown. I smoked through most of the stages as a carnivore/aggresive, I just started the space though (which I heard is good). Its a little too simple for my taste. I dont think this game will have much lasting power, even the sims had way more depth than this game. I would say its about a 30 dollar game at best, people are gonna forget about this game in a few months. This is classic over-hype. I did find the cell stage of the game interesting though.

If you want a better evolution game, go play that EVO game or whatever its called on the SNES. It is way better. Also I DO like the sims.

I would be if Warhammer didn't come along...

Damn MMOs

EDIT: Also, I found the cell stage to be way more fun than any other stage. The other stages just don't compare. The way you design things has no impact on the way they function really, like in LBP or other games.

Played Spore, got to phase 5 and played it for a couple hours. The game sucks. I'll never play it again.

necro thread here but

I found the first few missions very interesting as your design made a great impact in how you survived in the big cesspool of bacteria. Later on, your design means nothing, it's just a balance of how much attack vs health vs speed you have. Your mouth can be on your butt and it's still as effective as having a mouth in the direction of where you attack

Anyway, not a horrible game for the small $ you pay on Steam for it. I would have been PISSED if i paid $59.99 for it though

And indeed I am pissed. I wanted an evolution simulator, not "The Muppet Babies do the History of Life".

Spore, the game that broke EA's back. SimCity, the game that did it all over again. They don't seem to be having a good time with Maxis products.

Most of the major gaming sites are in the pockets of the publishers. It's a joke. Read the reviews from actual gamers. Sure they'll often be poorly written but at least they are real views.

I always wondered.
Why are the reviews often poorly written by actual gamers?

Spore has a lot of potential. if they would have releases an expansion that dealt with the weak points it could have been one of the greatest games of the decade.

Too bad EA lacks vision.

This.

Originally in the game, you were able to move freely from water to ground and back. EA wanted them to remove that so that the game wouldn't appear too complex or confusing. You can watch it in videos on youtube. It was in fact in the game.

But back to your point, they could have added complexity in expansions. Instead we got a 'cute creatures pack'. They also forced the evolution part of the game to make it so you could have every creature part. There was no reason not to do this, and only reason to do it. So every creature ended up being a frankenstein. The game needed limitations and simulated realism. Instead they went cutesy with it.

The mechanics of the game involved either destroying others, or go and shake maracas at your foe. (or you go for the neutral route, which just meant you did a little bit of both) There was no protecting of your nest eggs, they put that migration mechanic into the game to pretend to add complexity. I can't pretend to know what they should have done with the creature stage, but they really didn't do anything. You just walk around dancing or killing until you evolve.

If they would have cut the cutesy stuff and went with gritty realism, added some good game mechanics on top of a replaced evolution system, then fired out some nice expansions they would have had a hit.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I vaguely remember a game in the works that was suppose to be a remake of what Spore was suppose to be. I wonder what became of it.

Spore was hugely hyped, the video by Wil Wright got people very excited. I was dubious about the game and said before release I expected it would not be that good.

Dont forget TOR, that wasnt exactly a smashing success either considering all the hype.

Ah, The Old Republic is an entirely different animal. Spore introduced the casual gamer to the wonders of draconian digital rights management. Due to the game's bugginess, people who tried to repeatedly reinstall it quickly wasted their install limit, rendering the game unplayable. Casual gamers revolted at how tight the restrictions were and especially that they weren't mentioned on the package. Caused the big publishers to eventually do away with SecuROM. Don't upset casual gamers. They don't come back.

they showed an amazing video of spore before it came out and then like 2 years later it came out and it looked worse then the videos showed and was actually less fun to play then it was to watch the prototype. people were pretty disappointed.
