I'm signing up for my first medical study.
Rheumatoid arthritis associated autoimmunity in high risk populations studies of the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis.

My mom not only has metastatic breast cancer, she also has bad rheumatoid arthritis. So I'm going to participate in the study as a first degree relative. Shouldn't be too much involved. I'll give blood and take a urinalysis.

I have about 30 pages of information and consent forms to go through. Fun stuff. Looks like a sample of my DNA will be kept on record as well. And they will run tests to see if I have it. That would suck at 35 to find out I do.

My mom participated in a study on herceptin for her breast cancer and it went well. Without those treatments every 3 weeks, she would have passed away a couple of years ago. With that in mind, participating in the study is a no brainer for me.

Looks like the study will last a minimum of 3 years with the potential for a total of 8 years.

Guess the question is: Has anyone participated in a study, and what for?

did a study for a allergy drug. think it lasted 3 months, different pills each month. think it was for claritin, but was a long time ago. just kept a diary with allergy symptoms each day. got a free allergy test out of it too. pay was very low though.

ex did one in college. checked into a facility every weekend for a month. dont know what the drug was. everything was strictly controlled, and i think some days she had to give blood 6 or 8 times a day? thats why i passed on it... she walked away with a 2-3k IIRC

It's great that you're participating in this study; the topic is obviously close to home for you. It's a plus that they're not injecting you with all kinds of stuff. I never understood those folks that get injected with biological weapons, then exposed to radiation and then bit by a rabid dog...all for $29.05 per week.

Side note: Do you think you'll still be in the same area 8 years from now? That's a lifetime to me. Things/situations change.

This is being conducted through the university of chicago. I don't really plan on moving out of the chicagoland area. Both my wife and I have family here. I did all of my travelling/living elsewhere when I was younger. I like the area, so I don't see moving.
