Anyone else on AT participate/'own' a web developer business?

I have a thread in programming but that section doesn't get much traffic so I wanted to post here just in case.

I've talked to one AT'er about a really good website idea, but he and his partners are backed up right now and are not sure when they can even start on my idea.

So I was looking to see if anybody else is involved in a small partnership/business to help develop it.

I would like to do this with someone I 'know' a little better rather than random people on other sites.

This will take a lot of coding and need good design. I do have a coder we can work with but I need a professional design and possibly legal issues solved.

And it's a good thing Quintox posted here...because i'm not sure ZJ knows there are other forums here besides OT.

I'm guessing this is sarcasm about ZJ - judging solely alone on some of his threads, that is.

you could wait until you get to CU and go over to mcadams and find a lonely geek at 2 am on a friday night.

Do you have an idea or something more? Have you done research into this in terms of a business plan? (Market analysis, financial summaries, etc.?)

I hate to bring it down to this, but an idea alone doesn't have much value. If it's a good idea, you will have competitors and people working on it, if it's a great idea, you'll have even more competitors. Your competitive advantage is what will matter most, and the simple reason of "first mover advantage" isn't going to cut it anymore. It might have worked in the dot com bubble, but we all know how that turned out.

I'd be glad to discuss this with you and help you get going, but my take on it is that either you have to be serious and devoted, or not at all. If the idea is great and worth it, then do what it takes you get your business going. From my experience, it'll take more than a post on a forum to make anything happen, and most of it will be in person, very little online. You need to work with people close to you - Guy Kawasaki says that decreasing costs by outsourcing is great and all, but as an entrepreneurial stage, the developers shouldn't be more than 15 feet from the rest of the business.

I can go on and on about little bits and pieces, but in my experience, you have a bit of work to do before getting developers on board. If you have done it, then this isn't the place to find them, you should know how to find those people in person 😉

but he and his partners are backed up right now and are not sure when they can even start on my idea.

Sometimes investors give reasons like this, and in short, it's a nice way of saying no. I don't know who you're referring to, but if what you have is so great, and the idea better be amazing, then people will find a way to make it happen.

Drop me a message sometime and we can chat over email about this.
