The gun loons have really been on a buying spree since Obama was elected. I went into Turners Outdoorsman a couple months ago and they had hardly any guns for sale at all...they had been wiped out!

Thats because the gun control loons are in power. Even if they bring back the AWB and perhaps enhance it somehow to make it even more draconian - if the past serves as any reminder - the democrats lost control of the house and senate as a result of the passing those gun laws.

I find it funny that Jules calls them "gun control loons." There are about 80 million legal American gun owners. Trying to preserve our second amendment rights doesn't make anyone crazy. The fact that putting restrictive, stupid gun control laws in place only pisses off law-abiding citizens should show that we want to keep our rights.

/start flamewar

I call them gun loons because the fear mongering has made it virtually impossible for someone, like me (who isn't in a panic mode buying spree), to buy a gun or ammo for that matter.

Could be just more exposure in the Media making it seem like an increase. Only way to know for sure would be to see some Stats on it.

The stats are clear. This is a media conspiracy. 😉

Yesterday it was reported that 8 were killed in a nursing home shooting, 3 were killed when a 23 year old man decapitated his 5 year old sister and stabbed his 17 year old sister to death, and today 6 people were killed by a family member in CA.

There was also a few murder/suicides in the news last week.. Anyone else find this all a bit odd?

anecdotal evidence is WORTHLESS when discussing trends. dont bother.

if you wanna know, start looking for crime data. the FBI or some other govt org releases statistics like this every year.

if you want those statistics put with context, buy a book published by whoever's side you support to tell you how things are 😛

that's really interesting about Pelosi but the guy from Nevada isn't surprising at all, he would lose his seat if he stuck with Obama on this one.

I never realized how powerful the NRA was until I became a member and saw how much they fund-raise and provoke emotion. They are very, very good at what they do and there is no doubt in my mind that in many swing states they could easily make or break an election based on their recommendation.

That's the very reason I didn't renew my membership after the first year. I just got sick to death of the propaganda and constant begging for money.

to be fair, they're the main funnel of money spent lobbying against gun banning. and at the national level, one of the only means of lobbying against gun banning.

yes, they're very apt to employ fearmongering and propaganda. but they're also very effective at what they do.

i've yet to meet a lobbying organization that doesnt employ fearmongering and propaganda. you have to recognize them as simply tools in a bag of tricks.

is there an increase really? or an increase in the reporting of them nationally?

I agree. Notice how the media gets on a pitbull attack kick every now and then. In a month there will magically be like a 100 attacks and then the rest of the year you hear nothing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are more likely occur at certain times of the year, around Mating cycles, for eg.

Eh, I only joined to get into the gun show for free (it was $10 for the gun show or $25 for the NRA). I like a lot of what they do so I didn't mind the extra $15. The magazine I got every month was well worth it. I won't be renewing but I will probably sign up again to get into another gun show sometime this summer.

was an engineer🙁

"The man who gunned down his family in an apparent murder-suicide was an engineer at Yahoo Inc. who was helping his brother-in-law settle into Silicon Valley after arriving from southern India, police said Tuesday.

Investigators still don't know the exact motive for Devan Kalathat's rampage Sunday night that left six people dead and one critically injured at his home in an upscale neighborhood of Santa Clara. They said they were exploring the possibility of a family dispute, but they don't believe it was financially motivated.

Police identified those killed as Kalathat's 11-year-old son, Akhil Dev; his 4-year-old daughter, Negha Dev; his brother-in-law, 35-year-old Ashok Appu Poothemkandi; his sister-in-law, 25-year-old Suchitra Sivaraman; and the couple's daughter, 11-month-old Ahana Ashok........"

Economic hard times cause stress which leads to mental illness and instability so crime goes up.

Which is why they coined the term "The Great Depression" rather than the term "The Great Gay Happiness".

It appears that the number of murders in the US has actually dropped from a high point of 24,700 in 1991 to 16,929 in 2007. That's a pretty large decrease, especially when you consider that the population of the US increased like 15% during that time. In fact, total crime numbers were down by some 3.5 million in the same time period.

I expect that crime rates have gone up with the economic downturn, but certainly not by a third. I can't find any official stats for 2008. I got my numbers from this website.

Violent crimes are not increasing. "Crime waves" are mostly caused by reporting. See Halloween sadism.
Non-violent crimes on the other hand...
