Look at it:
SATA-Express-connector.jpg

It looks like ass :colbert:

Its like a throwback to the old IDE cables. I dunno aesthetics aside I just thought there would be a better solution that what seems to be 2 SATA cables and a new proprietary power connector (that is what that other part is right?) shoehorned together into one sort of cable... I am not a fan.

Yeah, I'm not impressed by the pretty-ness of it either.

Hopefully they'll clean it up in a gen or two when I'm ready for a platform upgrade :p

No only is it a big messy cable but its not as quick as M.2 can be (which can have 4x lanes). I think in the end either native PCI-E or M.2 drives in PCI-E cards is what people are going to want to use but I suspect its going to be half a year before its all on sale and readily available.

Yeah, I don't understand SATA Express... we already have the SFF-8087 connector, which supports 4X 6 Gbps SAS (and SATA) right now, and should support 12 Gbps SAS when that's finalized. Why do we need a bastardized solution? If you want more than 6 Gbps on a consumer board, just flat out use a PCI-Express 4.0 slot or a 2X or 4X 3.0 slot and be done with it.

Wasn't one of the reasons for the original SATA cable design to get away from the problematic IDE cable with regard to cable routing? From that perspective the design of this cable seems to be a step backwards. Presumably it also needs a SATA power cable?
