Anyone else not really care about Haiti?

The Haitians are stuck in the situation they're in, and their own government is not capable of doing what needs to be done.

The people who are living on the streets in the US have access to emergency medical care, they have access to food and often shelter through our government and private charities. We can't fix their situation by giving them more money, but money WILL help buy the supplies the Haitians need to survive.

I don't care if you don't care about the Haitians, but the idea that we should just let them die because they had the bad luck to be born outside of our borders is disgusting.

Once again mugs is spot on.

There are some tragedies that transcend our notions of "I live in this border and you live in that border". In the end we are all just humans on the same planet and sometimes the situation calls for man helping out his fellow man. Even the poorest of the poor in the US is far better off than the average Haitian in good times. I don't know how you can have a pulse and not be moved in some way by the images and video we've seen over the past week.

I can't find anything documented. last number i found was like 20 something per day but that stat was 20 years old and its source was shakey at best.

Then why are you using it in this conversation if you know your information is archaic and probably wrong?

I guess there are just so many dying each day they can't be counted. 🙄 Bottom line is you brought it up as if it were some epidemic in this country. Which it is not at all.

I wonder how many people who are all keen on sending money down there to help them would be willing to open the borders to Haitian immigrants?

Your exaggerational skills are staggering. You admit you don't even know the state of the country and, a few posts later, say that it's not an epidemic. How can you know that it's not an epidemic if you don't know? Because you're just trolling, that's why.

If you want to decide how YOUR money is spent, why do you keep saying that companies should give THEIR money to poor people in the US instead of poor people in Haiti?

A great point. I want to choose where my taxes go because I don't agree with how my government spends the money they steal from me.

Additionally, companies that are willing to donate millions to other countries blindly while ignoring their own city/state/nation make me sick.

its the same reason why I googled "how much rocky road ice cream rains down from the skies over America" and got zero results.

Links to companies donating millions and ignoring local communities.

What companies actually do this? Our company setup a Haiti fund, but throughout the year they do numerous other charitable events and fundraisers for local charities. Doing one does not preclude them from doing the others.

When this whole haiti thing is over, are they going to continue donating the same amount to those charities? Or are they going to revert back to their previous, smaller amount? If they can afford to do both, why don't they continue after the haiti thing to donate the amount that was going to haiti back to those charities?

It is over and above what they currently do. The Haiti fund has zero impact on any of the other charitable programs our company is involved with.

I know. My point is that, if they can raise that much extra money for haiti, why haven't they done so for their own local community to begin with?

As I said before, they are pretending to give a shit to make themselves feel good.

Do you really believe that our government has come to halt? Social programs have ended and non profits have been abandoned since this earth quake? pffft....🙄 I don't think anyone anywhere ever said on or off the record that americans care more about haiti than america. Never. Ever. prove me wrong.

I didnt say our government. But you dont see anyone doing telethons raising money for the homeless do you?

No one has to say anything, look at the amount of money raised in the short period of time. I think that says it all.

Probably more about appearances than how they feel. It is a sound business practice to do charitable work, from a tax perspective and from a goodwill perspective.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. There are hundreds of non-profits plus public programs dedicated to the homeless and needy.

Fundraising is a 3-way affair...you've got the fundraisers, you've got the beneficiaries....

And then you've got the donors. Everyone's got their own pet causes and they are picky about whom they give to. As with any type of marketing, you have to be able to get people's attention. Mundane everyday always-been-there poverty simply does not have the same impact as a major disaster being hammered away at by the news media. People are willing to dig deeper and give extra for something like this. Once it's out of the public eye, they will resume their previous patterns of activity without thinking "Maybe I'll earmark that money for a local charity next year."
