Anyone else not litter? With exceptions within the law.

I can't remember the last time I littered. I put my small pieces of trash in baggies I carry when I go out. It can have disadvantages like sometimes I forget I've put a small trash filled baggie in my back pocket. And when I get home it's all smelly and squishy but hey it still got the job done. Larger pieces I just have to carry around until a trash can comes along or 'till I get to my car.

Littering with "exceptions within the law" sounds like a contradiction but I can explain. Sometimes I put stuff on the ground and leave it. And in a specific situation it's legal at least in CA (California) and probably many other U.S. states. When I clean leaves and tiny branches off my car I toss them on the parking lot or street pavement. And the CA driving codes say this is legal as long as the branches are not too big. Like I think you can't legally take a big palm frond from you car hood and leave on the street or parking lot because those are big enough to cause damage if a car hits them.

I thought about putting all those leaves from the hood or roof of my car into baggies but years ago I said f*** it I'm not that environmentally friendly especially when it's dozens and dozens of leaves and I have permission to chuck them on the pavement or ground. Not in a single big pile, I spread them out thinly.

Oh edit - forgot to mention seems like people who litter are the types of people who watch reality shows. A couple times a year I watch Jersey Shore to see the romantic bar pickups and the two people going home to their room. But that's so seldom and can be chalked up to the leaves I toss on the pavement from my car which again happens to be legal.

I never litter, at least not actual garbage. I would not consider natural waste as being littering since it was probably destined to the ground anyway but landed on your car instead. Ex: leaves or snow. Though some laws can be weird, would not be surprised if it would be illegal in some places.

/Almost/ never. Just last week I was starting a new job on the side of the highway, and had kippered herring for lunch. Now, I had a choice of making the truck smell like a whorehouse, or do /something/ with the tin. I was looking at all the shit in the grass people threw out, and said "fuck it", and added my fish tin to the mix. It'll disappear with construction activity, and it's inert, and virtually invisible, so no real harm. I wouldn't throw something out of a car window, or drop something where people travel. My trash usually goes in my pocket if I'm on foot, and I get rid of it when I can get to a bin.

I don't spit chewing gum out on the sidewalk.

Have you ever been to India???
It's every where.

Littering is a huge problem here in the DR, people just toss empty pop bottles, plastic bags, styrofoam containers, you name it it's tossed....and for the love of god, don't ever look in the creeks/small rivers, their are loaded with garbage. I will say that they are getting much better at cleaning it up though, it's gotten a lot cleaner in the last 2 years.

I've thrown organic stuff like banana peels out. Not like on the sidewalk or people's yards or anything. Other than that, no.

When I was younger, I used to litter, but would wait until I find a spot with a group of garbage on the ground, because I figured people picking it up can do it all at once.

Now I don't litter at all. I hate even throwing things into garbage bin of any sort. I take things potentially recyclable back home so I can put them in a proper place. Say, a plastic cup from Starbucks, I take it home, rinse it, and goes in recycling. McDonald's, if they give me take out bags for some reason, I recycle the bag, and save the tissue for using it at home. Cardboard containers for fries? That goes in organics.

I've littered before but not in at least 6+ years. I don't even spit out my gum on the ground unless it's on my own property.

My house is surrounded by woods on two sides so I always dump leaves and lawn stuff in the ~6' border that I own. The day after Halloween is the annual Shotput the Pumpkin off the Deck. :D

It really annoys me when I see litter on trails when I'm hiking. I bring a Ziploc bag to put my banana peel in, and a spare plastic bag to gather all of my garbage up. It's one thing to throw a banana or orange peel in the woods (although it is organic, it does attract animals and that's bad), but I've seen empty water bottles and wrappers. Some people just have no respect for anything.

I have zero issue with throwing out fruit remnants. On something like a trail, I'll take it off the path, and cover with leaves or something. Otherwise, it just goes on the ground. The trashcan is the irresponsible place for those items.

yeah I mean consuming fossi fuels and plastic bags and human resources for something you can just throw into the distance and it's biodegraded in a few days?

So does your used toilet paper go into the organics or the paper recycling pile?

Oh, that... I guess you got me.

That has to go in the garbage, or the toilet. There's only a limited amount that can be done.

City recycling laws for where I live is food soiled paper can go into organics, and paper that are not soiled goes into recycling.

If hypothetically you wanted to put toilet paper in carts the city takes, it would have to be in the organics bin. Not that anyone would do so.

When hiking I my Dog to pick up trash for me.

Something like used toilet paper is a biohazard so you definitely would not want that floating around in a bin or possibly falling out if the bin falls over etc. When it goes in the toilet at least it's contained in the sewage system all the way to the treatment plant.

This.

Potentially biohazard materials are a big no no, from me and the city. Also hazardous chemicals. The real bad is when it enters lakes and rivers.

I remember stopping at old small country store right along the road and the back was against a small creek. While going back to the car a pipe coming out of the bottom back of the building let out a turd with paper and all right into the stream.

Businesses seem to have lax recycling standards than for homes. Our city trucks will simply refuse to take our bins if they see something that violates what's on the guidelines. For example, the city wants us to buy some sort of a paper bag to use in our kitchen organic bins, and they are actually quite expensive. So we bought some from a store instead. They threatened to not take our bins because of that.

But I worked in places where we threw away things far worse than that, all into garbage. The city is all about reducing garbage, so they want you to sort them(Garbage/Organics/Recyclables). The small businesses create garbage worth about 10 homes. Wouldn't it make sense to target them too, at least equally? Then I reminded myself most of these initiatives are about the bottom line and votes for the politicians.

I have so many litter stories I should right a book as a said I was a bit of an asshole in my younger days. Ok driving home one day rich division of potomac md some young preppy couple threw out two bags of fast food cups and all out of their convertible right as I drove by them. That clicked my rage switch, I slammed on my breaks turned around grabbed most of the trash and then swerved in front of them and made them stop. Got out and screamed up and down at them and threw the trash in their car. As I drove away I think they threw it back out lol but I was so embarrassed as I calmed down, as I said, asshole.

Obligatory

I remember those adds.

Iron Eyes Cody
(born Espera Oscar de Corti April 3, 1904 – January 4, 1999) was an Italian-American actor. He portrayed Native Americans in Hollywood films.[1] He also played a Native American shedding a tear about litter in one of the country's most well-known television public service announcements, "Keep America Beautiful". In 1996, Cody's half-sister said that he was of Italian ancestry, but he denied it.
