Anyone else not like the Z-5500's?

"Upgraded" from the Logitech X-230 2.1 system. Hopped on the deal for ClubIt 169.99 after rebates. Set it up, and am not impressed at all. And yes the subwoofer is loud. I was pissed that the center speaker is barely used at all, even though its right in front of your face. Seemed like the rear speakers put out more detail then the front ones, actually ruined my game of CoD4. Anyone else experience this? I found a local buyer to buy them from me, I can't stand them

How do you have them connected to the sound card? If using a digital connection, try a analog connection. The analog outputs of the barracuda are pretty good and will outdo the D->A circuitry of the speaker's control pod.

Also, make sure, if using a digital connection, that DDL or DTS interactive is enabled.

If using a analog connection, make sure to have the speakers set to 6CH direct and not PLII or similar mode.

yep, made sure it was on 6ch direct (actually sensed it by itself), messed around with DDl and DTS. Just re-hooked up my 230's and couldnt be happier with them. I dont know if anyone's tried the 360 degree sound test for the barracuda software, but its like a helicopter flying 360 degrees around you. On the z-5500's, once it got to the center speaker it just disappeard, on the 230's it sounds even better. I guess it's a either love it or hate it thing.

change levels? audio effect? make sure windows is configured for 5.1.
My center speaker was too loud for me where I have it situated (because its the closest speaker to my face, it drowned out the front pair), and I had to adjust the levels from full to about 60% and now with both music and movies it sounds very fluid across all channels and no channel in particular now stands stronger than the rest. Music is naturally balanced to the fronts and center versus rears, so that portion is something beyond my control if using Pro Logic II.

You have it set up wrong then.

You only use DDL or DTS when you are using a digital connection. If you are not then you should have 3 analog cables(3.5mm cables) running from the sound card then to the control pod.

I don't do any gaming, but my Z-5500s use the center by far the most (TV, DVDs).

I will vouch for that as well. In my experience (Analog PC) it has been amazing, this sound system is the best bang for the buck hands down. The center is definitely the loudest channel on mine as well.

I also have a 360 hooked up with optical and again, the center makes the most noise. I can't even turn it up all the way since I'm in an apartment.

And lastly, my TV sound output is also connected to the control pod unit using the digital coax (I believe that's what you call it). Sounds great again.

I think that the OP doesn't have it configured correctly, either that or he has a defective unit.

Well, I dont watch tv or movies on my pc, I have my xbox and everything else on my big lcd. I configured the barracuda to 5.1, made sure cod4 is 5.1, etc etc. The center speaker did make fuzzy noise while the others werent making any, and yes i checked the connections about 15 times.

i've used and heard both the z-2300 and z-5500's. the sound from the logitech speakers all sound more or less similar: boomy bass, squeaky highs, non-existent mids.

some EQ profiles helped, but the sound quality doesn't compare to other speakers from real audio/speaker companies.

If you want me to help you you need to be answering the questions I ask as we go along here.

Eh, they work just fine for me and my current setup. They definitely aren't HT grade speakers, but they do the job that they were intended to do rather well IMHO (at least at their price point). You definitely can get tons of better sounding speakers... but obviously price will also increase. I have them hooked up to my PS3, 360, HD-cable STB, and my tosh HD-A2 and they do quite well at the lowish levels that I keep them on in my college apartment room. As far as the center balance, that isn't a problem for me. I don't know what problem you are experiencing, but it sounds like 1) a defective unit or 2) a software/mixer problem. Have you tried connecting your 360 or anything like that to them (play a movie with 5.1) to see if the center is working correctly (at least than you could rule out a defective unit).

If you do this op, try using a THX optimizer DVD. These come with channel tests and would isolate the problem as either your computer, or a defect.

Never liked the Logitech's either. Too boomy for my tastes. They're good if all you do is game, but for movies and music they're lacking.

I sold them and got the Klipsch GMX 5.1 setup, and while I really liked the sound the control pod sucked. So, I chucked that and hooked the speakers hooked up to a Yamaha receiver instead and have been REALLY impressed with the results.

I love mine, although i only do stereo x2 out of the PC. Use optical for both the PS3 and HD DVD player.

meh, just sold them and make a $25 profit after i get my rebates back. Thanks for all your help, just couldn't justify spending $220 on speakers that I'm not very fond of.

You didn't even take the time to troubleshoot them

LOL, you probably needed to replace one satellite at worst.

You're probably one of those people that thinks always badly of a brand if you happen to get one bad unit one time.

I agree that it was probably a setup problem or a defective unit. When you sold them, were they aware that there might be something wrong with them?

I have the Z5300E and love them, my friend just got the 5500 from ClubIT and is very happy with them. I find the 5300 play very nicely with my auzentech. :D

Considering the first thing I posted in this thread were steps to troubleshoot the lack of surround sound from the speakers....I bet he did.

I've ran into a few people here and there that seem to jump to conclusions and ignore help if it doesn't support their own opinion.

You know something is wrong if he's satisfied with the 2300's but not the 5500's...

Make that x-230s, not z-2300s that he's satisfied with ;)

Agreed... what was the point of this original post again?
