And "update all" for your apps would be a nice start. Also I'd like to see the fragmentation issue addressed more (I know Google is working on it) because I'd like to see some of the same games the iPhone is getting. Of course this is almost damn near impossible with all the hardware configs Android runs on.

I can dream, right? ;)

Yeah I'd like an update all button too. At the moment I'm pretty OCD so I catch and update apps just about as soon as new versions come out. Rarely do I have more than one update to do at a time.

I get all excited when I have updates.

I need to update the app list. I've been trying a bunch out lately...downside is most of them have sucked.

Given how long it took Droid just to get up to 2.1, I wouldn't count on 2.2 in May.

I'm definatly excited for it! I just rooted my Droid with Cyanogen Mod so I'm interested in seeing if I could update to 2.2.

I wish there was a way for google to push out updates quicker to phones, but I know that would cause too many problems. Considering how long 2.1 took I'll be surprised to see 2.2 in may, then again I won't be back in the US until July so it wont matter anyway.

I was wondering when we would hear about 2.2 or above as it's been pretty quiet since 2.1 release.

Officially you wont see 2.2 in May, not after the complete clusterfuck that the 2.1 update was. There will be ROMs using the code before that I imagine.

so if I pick up the Incredible with 2.1, this stuff is easily updateable / futureproof in that sense?

It'll update eventually, but don't count on it any time soon. The Incredible uses Sense, and Sense devices are notoriously slower to get updates. For instance, the Hero is still waiting for the 2.1 update.

to be fair though, has any 1st gen android device received a 2.1 update yet?

Hero is still on 2.1. They are really going to have to figure out a way to address this fragmentation, especially since some apps are limited to the newer versions. I'm rooted with a 2.1 ROM so I don't care that much but it would be nice.

None of them, they're still on 1.6 or 1.5. I believe the G1 specifically is just not able, hardware limitations. The Hero (with Sense) will be getting the 2.1 update, but due to the longer development cycle involving Sense, skipped 1.6 and 2.0. The Droid Eris is in the same boat I believe.

I'm not in the "yarrrr don't get a Sense device, you'll get slow update" crowd, I'm just pointing out that Sense devices are likely to be a bit slower than Google Experience devices. Wouldn't affect me, I'd still get the Sense option, personally.

If you want to do it the stock way, then no not by you. You have to wait for HTC to make the rom and then for Verizon to approve it and release it to phones. Other option is to wait for someone to get 2.2, mess around with it, and then install it yourself. Have to be rooted to do that though, and it can be iffy.

But the Froyo code will be posted publicly, so it'll be integrated into various custom ROMs long before it hits a stock release. :p I'm using Cyanogen Rom for the Droid right now, and there's no way I'm going back to stock. Ever.

Why not? Sure 2.1 was a cluster fuck, but 2.01 was released exactly when they said it would, which was barely a month after the Droid's initial release.

I hope they go with a different content distributor next time.

2.0.1 was barely an update to the operating system. I had a G1 from launch - the Cupcake and Donut updates (1.5 & 1.6) took longer than most expected to actually hit the phones in an official update, too. And none of the early phones have even gotten 2.0, let alone 2.0.1 or 2.1.

Its nice the Google updates the OS so frequently, but there has been absolutely no evidence of the course of Android's history that a device will be promptly updated after Google releases. In fact - have ANY of the phones with custom UIs (MotoBlur or Sense) gotten updates beyond small fixes? Pretty sure the Sense and Blur phones are still on their original 1.5.

If they don't really improve the Exchange/Corp mail, calendar, notes, to-do functions drastically then I hate to say it but I'll switch back to the iPhone when/if it comes to Verizon.

FFS they don't even have numerical pin locking which for most Exchange shops is a much have feature in order to allow remote wiping.

It wasn't the update itself that anything to do with it. It was how it was distributed. That vendor has a long history of fail.

Heck, they still haven't fixed the hands free BT dialing.

Pin locking is listed in the changelog for the upcoming Cyanogen 5.0.7.x for the Moto Droid and N1. Not sure if the first release of 5.0.7 will have it fully functioning or if they are merely laying the framework first.

I look forward to all OS updates, since I get bored pretty easily. :)

The nice thing about the N1 is that it's Google's baby and should be the first on the block for any OS updates. We don't have to wait on 3rd party vendors to get updates and new features.

And I'm with others, I want an "update all" button! That and a better media app.
