it's a different experience. here it's pay entry for 3 movies. food is good and pretty cheap or you can bring in your own if you pay a $10 fee. sitting in the car is cool because it's almost like being in your own space so you don't have to put up with annoying kids. you can also sneak in alcohol. screen probably isn't as good in the theater. Sound not as good. 30 min drive vs 10 minutes.

i would like to check out the alamo drafthouse in va

It's a cool experience, especially for kids. However, it's not someplace I go for movies I really want to see.
- You have to worry about the weather
- The one here is extremely crowded. Either get there 3 hours early (not an exaggeration) or you're going to have a terrible view or it is sold out.
- They start the first movie too early. It's still a little light outside, meaning you can barely see the first half hour.
- The sound is really bad.
- People aren't especially courteous. Headlights, dome lights, and brake lights turn on all the time. People talk and yell.
- Concessions take about an hour to get.

i'd say a huge downside is the sound sucks as well.

i would never watch a movie that i actually wanted to see, for the first time at a drive in. it would totally ruin the experience simply because the sound would be terrible.

this is how I feel. for older flicks with mono or stereo sound, I'd be fine with it.

Though, I'd still watch Drive In before watching on a phone, or tablet, or laptop, or any other similarly pointless contraption.

I love the Drive-In. Don't go nearly as often as I used to when I had 2 within a 10 minute drive. Now it's closer to 30.

I love the drive-in theater. $6 for 2 new release movies. This week, I saw The Wolverine, The Conjuring, Turbo, and Despicable Me 2. Good food available, plus they allow you to bring in your own food. The gigantic things of popcorn are only $3.50, with reasonable sized for 2 people for less than that. Nachos, French fries, etc., and nothing at inflated prices. FM stereo sound, with a broadcast that I can pick up nearly a mile away, so, while it isn't Dolby 7 cannel with bells and whistles, it's still good enough. The just switched to digital projectors, but even before, had excellent screens, and about the largest screens in the state. Can't wait to see the line-up of movies for next week.

When the "chef" at the concession stand told me about them serving steak, he said:

"I can cook you a ribeye as tender as my Mothers love."

Without missing a beat, the kid at the register said:

"His Mom doesn't love him all that much.".

I LOLed!

"when i was your age..."

I guess you never saw an erectile dysfunction ad on TV before. What, are you 100 yet grandpa? Sheese.

Even Heraldo Riviera is strutting his shirtless torso around at 70, saying it's the new 50.

The driveins and movie theaters make 80% or more of their money off the concessions, so if anyone likes them a lot, they need to be stingy on the food and drinks they bring in, and visit the concession stand a few times during the movies, or driveins will completely disappear again.

There's only like one or two here in the LA area. Only reason to go is to get some action, sound sucks, people are loud with lights on, not a great experience to see a movie I actually want to see.

We have been going to the drive in for 40 years. I still love them. We have one mot too far away that recently upgraded their projectors to all digital, and the picture quality is pretty good. http://www.49erdrivein.com/ . $8 for 2 movies, and they don't care what you bring in to eat or drink. No grills, though. The sound isn't bad, either, out of our car system. We also sit outside in lounge chairs....

That's what the big chain theaters keep saying. Drive-in: $3 per movie (adults), $1 (kids), new releases. Drive-in: $3.50 for a family sized popcorn. You can take two kids this weekend to see Planes and Smurfs 2 (two movies), go on an empty stomach, and eat until you're stuffed, total price: $25. I won't believe for a second that the regular theaters aren't making money off the tickets, unless the 80% is an accounting thing where 20% of the ticket price is profits AFTER paying for the building, equipment, employees, etc.

$25 for a family of four, including enough popcorn to make you vomit & drinks. Because it's so easy to bring your own food in, their food and drink prices are equivalent to what you pay anywhere else - not jacked up with the drive-in owners proclaiming, "oh boohoo! We can't make any money without ripping you off."

Big difference, the drive in is one movie or at most two at a time. The big movie theaters 5, 10, 20 movies at a time and as we know, the MPAA likes to make sure they get as much money as they can.

Since your location says "Los Angeles," we can assume you don't get out to the drive-ins. My local drive-in has 4 (four) new releases each week; and another poster above pointed out that his drive-in theater shows 3 movies on each screen each night (not sure if there's one screen or two screens.)

But, more to MY point: the drive-ins are smaller than the parking lots of the big theaters. The big theaters get to show the same movies over and over and over, all day long, getting a new crowd every few hours. The drive-in only has one showing (though two consecutive movies, or three, per screen) each day - AND THEY MAKE A PROFIT AT $3 TICKETS PER MOVIE (adults) $1 (children).

Drive-ins are awesome. We have a couple of them semi close to us and one has 80s night this weekend. Breakfast Club and Lost Boys? Oh yes.
