Anyone else just counting the days until it would be possible for McCain to run for President?

One thing for sure, this country and the various political parties will be vastly different 12 years for now. Sadly, IMHO, the current GOP leadership is in lala land, even as a partisan democrat, I had hoped they would be well on their way to learning from past mistakes. But I am now somewhat resigned to the fact that the GOP learning process is going to take far longer.

This.

The GOP has to make a sea change in their outlook if they want to become the majority party again. Which is going to piss off their traditionally religious based voters. Really puts the GOP between a rock and a hard place. What might hurt them further is the younger generation is less likely to be on their side on wedge issues like gay marriage / abortion etc and that will have a longer term effect.

Megan is cashing in on her fathers name. Nothing wrong with that, but as someone posted earlier she comes across as an airhead. Maybe she will mature an develop into a adult whose opinion is worth considering. Right now she is not. Time will tell.

Yes, some of her columns are very "society section" but the fact is that she's not trying to be a traditional pundit like George Will or John Leo. Her positions certainly seem a damn sight better than those of most traditional Republicans.

We need to stop desperately seeking the next person to worship like they're the fucking return of Jesus. We need to start putting some intelligent, pragmatic people into office.

Trip Palin for the '36 Republican Candidate!!

I can always count on you for the lulz Red.

The only reason she even pretends to be a Republican is that her father was the nominee. She's got a better chance of running on the Democratic ticket.

I am fine with her.

That being said though I don't know how people can even touch her with the word "Conservative"

She's probably smart enough not to want to be President, but a man can dream. At the very least it's nice to see some sanity out of a conservative in the media; she's a welcome respite from the likes of O'Reiley, Hannity, and Beck.

She'd probably be a viable candidate, and if there's a future for the party, it's with candidates like her with a less rabid social agenda. The problem is with the contingent in the party who would never accept her - these are the same people who think they have their finger on the pulse of the nation while constituting Bush's 20% approval rating at the end of his term.

This is true imo. The Republicans can win if they shed the social conservative crap or at least keep it on a low key priority and run on a small govt policy and then actually legislate like they campaign. As well they have to capture at least 40% of the Latino vote if they want a snow balls chance in hell.

"i wasnt born during the french revolution, but i know about it" is akin to saying "i wasnt alive during WWII but i know about it"

while saying "i wasnt alive during Regan's presidency, so i dont know about who he blamed and how long for" is like saying, no i dont know the score of September 21st 2002's Indians vs Whitesox game...

I saw her on Bill Mahr's show and she got easily flustered. She wouldn't be able to handle campaigning let alone the critics as President

I think there are plenty of republicans like her but they would never vote for a "liberal" dem even though that Dem is more in line with their views.

To many vote on party name and not the person or their values. That and the religious nuts that control the Rep's would not allow it.

Of course they wouldnt vote for a "liberal" Dem because those are the far left whackjob counterparts to the far right wing whackjobs in the Republican party.

That's pretty stupid. The people on the national stage that are the furthest to the left can barely even be called socialists let alone anything like communist or whatever. Those on the far right have to look over their left shoulder to see Mussolini.

She'd get torn apart during the GOP primary debates.

It gives me a small hope that whoever leads it will not simply be Democrat-lite. That it will not simply be the next Bush or McCain.

That they have not come back strong is a good sign that their wounds are deep enough to inspire deeper changes than a new coat of lipstick on the "compassionate" big government conservative. That pig doesn't need lipstick, it needs to be turned to bacon.

"Progressive-Republican" is about as much as an oxy-moron you can possibly have. I don't think she has any idea what she's talking about.

The GOP needs to listen to people like Ron Paul.

yeah, damn teddy roosevelt!

Oh, don't worry, you probably won't, at least not any time in the near future. However, I can't say the same for the ditzy broad from Alaska. Who knows, maybe Willow will be knocked up by the time 2012 rolls around. Then we could have unmarried teenage moms in the White House.
