Tonsil Stones also known as Tonsillolith is something that has afflicted me since I was probably 12 years old (I'm now 28) and I hate them.

Most of the time it's just a nuisance that is also disgusting but from time to time they will get stuck in the "crypts" of my tonsils where they can, and often do cause a sore throat.

I've been reading up on them recently as I never actually knew what they were technically called and was honestly a bit embarrassed to ever mention it to anyone, but in searching the all knowing Google I came across this discussion on it and now know the official term for them and also realize that a there is a large number of people out there that also have them.

So that made me wonder who here (if any) have had them and if you have, what have you done to prevent/stop them?

The ex has these and they drive her mental. She has been to multiple doctors about it and has even had scans and everything, but has yet to find any sort of resolution.

I have them sometimes. I notice them in my mouth, like, damn, is this a piece of food? They are really stinky too. Probably have them every 2-3 months, really no big deal for me.

I think I have had these from time to time. One more reason I wish I would have had my tonsils out when I was a kid and health care was affordable.

Gargling with warm salt water from time to time might help prevent them or using an irrigating device to clean the tonsil crypts may help.

Post nasal drip is a leading factor in causing tonsil stones. If you can control that it would eliminate the problem.

I do suffer from post nasal drip but have no clue how to stop it.

I suppose this is one of the benefits of not having tonsils.

From what I was reading even you can still get them, just not as easily.

The same tissue that the tonsil's are made out of is also on the back of the throat behind the tongue where you can't see and some people get them in that area.

OMG- I had these and had no idea what they were called. i told a doctor that I coughed up these grayish-white pellets once and he just went "Ewww....here's some antibiotics." I have been using Listerine twice a day and it really seems to help. I am constantly coughing all the time however.

You might think that but I'm vigilant about it and gargle and brush my tongue all the time.

Can she just get them removed? My tonsils have been in a jar in my moms cabinet since I was 7. Yeah gross I know, but I was 7 and the doc asked me if I wanted to keep them. I said they looked like mouse brains.

Waterpick is the best way to remove or avoid them, or so a dentist told me. I get them occasionally too, and I know because my throat will start to get sore. I look back there and see one, push it out with a q-tip. (And push/probe in case there are extras hiding.)

They really are nasty.

I get these too. I dislodge them by pressing at the side of the tonsil with a cotton-swab. If that doesn't do it, I'll clip off the end of the swab with a nail cutter, to form a point - and start stabbing away at it with that, gently of course. Eventually this moves stuff around enough to push it out using the first method described.

Usually though just pressing with a cotton-swab is enough to get rid of them. This gets done about once a week. It was never an issue I'd think of that would need a doctor visit though.
