I hear it on my tv only when the rest of the room is kind of quiet. Some people are just more sensitive to that kind of sound.

BTW: My TV is a Toshiba as well.

Nope, never have heard it....

I'm sure my high frequency hearing is dead though.

IIRC it's the first to go with hearing damage.

The 3-4kHz range goes before the high frequencies do.
Ahh.

eh, isn't that the human voice range?

Suckage.

The whine was also a classic sign as time to trash the CRT. I've said good riddance to them and embraced LCDs, never looking back.

I can hear it on TV's and CRT's. It drives me insane, and nobody else in my family seems to be able to hear it that well. I know when the TV downstairs is on, because I can hear the whine in my room.

QFT...the bit about it being goddamn annoying plus being able to hear it a long way away at least ;)

I hear it on any tv within like a mile of me....has always driven me nuts, and no one else can EVER hear it, and they think i'm nuts...I did do a little test to prove it once, and I could always tell when it was on with my eyes closed, heh.

Exchanged the tv for a Toshiba 20" and it has the same problem if not worse!

WTF? Whats up with these small tv's? Now I don't know if there's any point in returning the Toshiba and trying another brand.

I can hear it on some TV's. Wife cant.

That's been my experience too. Some are worse than others, but they all make some kind of whine.

I can hear it with basically any electronics.

Freaks out the family... "TURN OFF THE FVCKING TV!"..."But... But... I muted it! NOOOOOOO!"

The reciever makes a different sound from the TV too, so I can tell which is on.

Yes I can hear it. Everytime I walk into a room, if the tv is on, even if it's on a black screen or something (input channel with no input), I can tell the TV is on.

So every single CRT tv has it?

So there's no point in exchanging the Toshiba for another one, crappy.

Everything with Stereo Audio has it.

This is incorrect.

The 19kHz pilot tone in FM broadcasts is NOT what you're hearing. The high pitch is 15.734 kHz in North American sets and is an oscillation artifact from the flyback transformer used for acceleration for the CRT. Some sets are noisier than others. Sometimes the noise will increase with set age.

With the advent of Dobly noise reduction on casette decks in the 80's the MPX notch filter was devised to remove this pilot tone (19k) to prevent mistracking of the noise filter encoding on FM broadcasts. The filters were not reducing audible artifacts as these were typicaly inaudible.

Yep, I still hear "flyback whine" all the time.

YES! I hear the whine too. I usually only hear it when the volume is off or when it's just coming on. It's annoying. None of my family members can hear it...they think I'm nuts :p

My thoughts exactly.
