Anyone else hear the high pitch whine from tv's?

I bought a 20" Insignia tv for the exercise room today. Plugged it all in, turned it on and the high pitched whine coming from it was horrible. I couldn't stand it.

Exchanged the tv for a Toshiba 20" and it has the same problem if not worse!

WTF? Whats up with these small tv's? Now I don't know if there's any point in returning the Toshiba and trying another brand.

My mom has a 27" Orion flat screen that whines like crazy when you first turn it on. If you shut it off for awhile then turn it back on it's gone. She can't hear it, but it drives me nuts. My 27" Sansui doesn't make any whine, though.

Nope, never have heard it....

I'm sure my high frequency hearing is dead though.

IIRC it's the first to go with hearing damage.

It could be many things that causes the squeal, but it is likely that the sound is from some lose/flickering powered part that is vibrating with the electric frequency. Or, as simple as a defective electronic device in the house that interfering with you TV.

Either live with the sound, return and get another set, or tempt faith and try to glue down or spray a sealant onto the back of the tube with the yoke removal (require some electronic understanding).

Might be in the cable signal as well. I went thru the same thing for a time, but noticed that the noise was gone when watching DVD's. A cable tech came out and replaced our box, but the problem continued. They came back again and put some kind of part in the line. Problem solved.

Make sure you have no "unshielded speakers" any closer than 1ft from the tv and use ferrites on the high voltage cords, going into the outlets.

This is like, a yearly repost.

Yep, I always hear the whine from TVs, and my monitor also whines when it's off but still plugged in.

It's like when you walk into a room and you just know that there's a TV on somewhere nearby. Or if you're in a room where there's usually always a TV on, but it's off for some reason, and you suddenly notice how quiet the room is.

I can hear it too... it's barely audible, but I can tell if there's a TV on in the house no matter what room I'm in.

THEY did it. THEY are the reason some of us can hear it. Don't you remember? THEY put something in your head! In my head. THEY are coming back... :D

It drives me nuts if I'm in a quiet room. But with the treadmill running, I don't her the whine.

I think I'll just stick with the tv I have.

So is this caused by cheap parts in the tv?

My friends TV does it pretty badly. He couldn't hear it but it was annoying as hell. Most TVs I've come across don't do it though.

The 3-4kHz range goes before the high frequencies do.

You're talking about this.

Quite annoying. LCD does not have it. DLP colourwheel motors can whine too similar to HDD although this is rare and most people never hear it over the roar of the sound system unless you're running some crappy HTIB.
