anyone else have nerd's disease?

rudeguy

Lifer
My wrist has been messed up for a while now and I finally decided to go to the docs. I kinda suspected that it was something like carpal tunnel but everything I read on it said to get your ass to the docs. He confirmed that I have the beginning stages of it and told me to get a wrist brace to wear at night (using one during the day at work doesn't seem feasible). If its not better in a couple weeks he wants to talk about surgery (GAH!).

Anyone else have this? I thought being a nerd was safer than a partier....

ho humm

No yet but I think I'm working on it. My wrist and palm get sore at times from too much mouse usage.

It isn't a nerd disease e.g. my F-IN-L developed carpal tunnel from being a career fire fighter.

So far I am clear of it even with a decent amount of use but I also exercise my wrist at least three times a week. 😉

Nope. I stretch my wrists when I train and I rock climb so I'm careful with my wrists.

My right wrist is a bit sore at times, but I stretch it and also try to use some weights to make it better.

I also switched my work mouse to left-handed to try and balance out the problem, so my work mouse I use my left hand and my home mouse I use right; works pretty well.

Yea, my dad got it from being an auto mechanic. He just had surgery for it a few weeks ago.

Had it years ago. What changed it was a combination of or one of:

1) Changing hand position. My keyboard never leans up with the far part higher than the close. That is just stupid and poor ergonomics. A keyboard should be flat or if anything even tilted down. Also ensure your wrists are flat and the hands are abosolutely never bending upwards.

2) Stopped playing first person shooters.

I think that the change in position was most important, but now despite being in front of a computer about 50 hours/week I have zero wrist pain. I never play games but i am also religious with the mouse and keyboard pads. I used to have severe wrist pain, so there probably is hope for you. Surgery is correcting what has been brought on by overuse. If you get surgery and don't correct the overuse I presume you may end up with the problem again.

I had the surgery done on my right wrist last month. Gonna have the other one done next month. It hurts more now that before the surgery.

yeah, i've had some symptoms at times

i did some drunken push ups one night and the next day i had a ganglion cyst on my wrist.

my wrists are all fucked up and really weak.

I have one of those too. That was one of the things that worried me. Doc said we wouldn't worry about it unless it got bigger.

I get wrist pain sometimes and have had my hands go numb in conjunction with the pain a few times. When I'm paying attention to my posture, I usually don't have problems though. I have hypothyroidism too, which apparently puts me at higher risk for carpel tunnel syndrome from what I've read.

I think I'm getting it from too much pippetting, and using that damn Mac mouse for way too long (work). probably the most anti-ergonomic, user un-friendly device known to man.

the tendons along the back of my hand hurt something fierce form time to time.

once i did enough internet searches to figure out what I had, I decided against going to see the doc about it b/c the lump itself didn't hurt and everything i read said the doctor won't do anything initially but tell you to wait and see if it goes away, which it did after a couple weeks.
havent had one since, but when I've done push ups (rare), i've done knuckle pushups which aren't as hard on my wrists

I upgraded the work mouse to a logitech trackball, which seems to help tremendously. Though the sensitivity of the track ball is rather annoying. As soon as I left-click, the ball jostles a bit on its own, moving the cursor away from the target, or out of drop-down menu 40% of the time :|

Second time's a charm? How long is recovery supposed to be?

It's definitely a pretty awful pain. Anybody who's thinking about surgery who has not already reduced computer use to a bare minimum is captaining a ship of fools. Hopefully anybody thinking of surgery who video games a lot, for example, will cut the gaming back to zero first and see how you are in a month.

It comes and goes. I've switched mice, got ergo keyboards, and generally improved my ergonomics and haven't had it too bad for quite some time now.

Also, the surgery isn't too bad from what I've heard. Just cut open the ligament covering the nerve and you're good to go!

Huh? I've been using computer for years and have no wrist problems or back problems. Can't say the same about my co-worker. She got the ergonomic works going go around her desk.

Amateur. You do not have the dexterity to master the trackball. Does the ground shake when you walk across wood floor?

i thought i had carpal tunnel (pain), went to the doctor and it was diagnosed to be cubital tunnel (ulnar nerve). :-(

trying to change my posture, usage, etc, but the doc says the only way is to stop doing whatever i am doing (my job/work) - unfortunately.
