Anyone else have local news in HD?

Our local NBC affiliate recently moved to broadcasting the evening news in HD. It's definitely a nice change of pace. The entire show, including remote segments, is shot in HD.

I'm curious whether this is unusual. Do you have this where you live?

no HD local news here.... on a side note, i noticed microsoft has HD commercials on the HD channels now...

I get all of my local stations in HD.🙂

You mean all your local news is in HD? I think all local stations are in HD in most cities in the US, but the news is a different story.

Exactly.

Most people think "Oh, the channel is in HD" must mean everything they see on that channel is by definition HD. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Ironically, it seems that the stations with the most antiquated equipment are the ones going towards high-def local news broadcasts-- probably because they needed to purchase new equipment anyways so they invested the few extra dollars to upgrade to HD.

You probably won't see too many stations follow suit until they can find a way to justify the cost of the all-new equipment necessary to produce a local show in high-def.

I figured you were in Minnesota as soon as I saw this thread title....

I don't really see any difference so far with Kare11, but then again I don't have an HD receiver with my DirecTV service (don't want to give up my hacked dtivo's)

And between wcco, kstp, kmsp & kare11, kare11 wins by a huge margin when it comes to the news. I can't stand wcco or kstp.

It cracks me up that people think just because their local stations pass on national feeds of HD shows, that everything they show is in HD.

Folks, if it isn't in 16:9 it isn't HD. That's your first clue. Your second clue should be picture quality.

But after DirecTV's nasty little HD compression scam, I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that everyone is just fscking blind.

I assume you're talking about KARE. While the remote shots look pretty good, they're generally not shot in HD.

The studio cameras (including the Weather Backyard & Newsroom cameras) are HD cameras. The field acquisition cameras are Sony DVCams shooting in 16x9 mode (but not HD-that probably won't happen for a couple of more years). KARE's weather graphics equipment vendors, including radar, just announced that their equipment is now available in 16x9 HD-however that usually means it's at least 6 months away. So, they'll upgrade that equipment within a year. The character generator (video titling) is HD and running in 16x9 mode. Non-weather graphics will be upgraded in early 2007 to HD equipment. All other material that airs from other sources (NBC networks, CNN and other TV stations) is usually in 4x3 format, with side curtains on that material to fill out the 16x9 frame. They never intentionally stretch video from 4x3 to 16x9-if you see it on the air, it's either a mistake or recorded that way by a non-KARE station or network.

EDIT: There are only about 12 stations in the nation doing HD, so the poll is definitely not accurate. It just goes to show you the reality is that most people are simply misinformed about HDTV.

Thanks for the correction. I assumed the remote segments were HD because they're 16x9. They still look damned good, in any case.

I do find it odd (in an entirely positive way) to have the local news in HD. I must say that since I got an HD set and HD digital cable package, I find myself watching HD channels almost exclusively, so it's a treat to have the local news in HD.

I had figured this was somewhat rare - I didn't know there were only 12 stations in the country doing it. Cool!

Yes. I know for certain that at least one channel broadcasts the local news in HD, and I think one or two others might, but I'm not sure.
