Pencils rock. Those pentel mechanical ones are my scribe of choice for work. When I'm doing any sort of wood work or construction stuff the big fatty ones you get from lumber and block yards are indespensible. Try writing dimensions or cut marks on a 8" cinder block with a pen.
Other things that suck about pens? Don't like writing when it's cold. Pencils never complain.
They don't like writing on angles. A pencil doesn't care.
Sometimes you have to scribble all over the paper before you free up the roller ball and ink start flowing. A pencil is always ready roll.

I remember back then my parents would buy those cheap china wooden pencils. They suck to write with and the erasers would never erase but they were great for pencil fights.
If you aren't using a Ticonderoga then I could understand why you would be unhappy with a standard pencil. Any other standard pencil sucks compared to a Ticonderoga.
