Just got almost 100 spam emails in my junk mail account. These were all of the "Undeliverable mail" type where they use your email address as the sender and have the spam bounce back to you. I don't really care as it's my junk email account but I also got one at my legit gmail account! Also never seen so many at once.

Mine increased a month or so ago from about 2 to 25 in my spambox.. but that might have more to do with signing up for something that I can't remember.

Maybe stop signing up for porn with your email address. ;)

People still sign up for porn? At any rate things like that and filling in online forms and such is the reason I have that junk mail account. It's a hotmail account, is there any other use for hotmail anyway?

There is a bug in SpamAssassin that caused certain mail to be mis-tagged beginning on January 1, 2010. If you have been getting more spam (or less efficient filtering, false positives, etc.), contact your administrator and see if they use SpamAssassin or something that tends to use it (amavisd, etc.)

No this wasn't mis tagged this was legit spam. Besides whatever MS uses for hotmail is completely inadequate. I get lots of spam at my Gmail account too but 99% of it is correctly recognized as opposed to something like 40% for hotmail.

The only spam I get on my Hotmail account is from Craigslist scammers/spammers.
I did have a Yahoo mail account (for Yahoo Messenger) for a while and that thing filled up with spam in a few days.

I revived ye 'ole hotmail account b/c of Bing cashback.

netted me $24 in one purchase, 2 days....better than the Credit Union would have given me in the previous 5 years! (had I still been a member ;))

I recently got onto a list somehow, keep getting all of these 'WoW account security' phishing emails after I made a new d2 account to try out the epic fail that is 1.13. And a few days ago I started getting gw/ncsoft 'account security' emails as well

Yep. It's like a new "spam factory" has recently come on line. Within the past couple of weeks, I've been getting 5 times as much as I had been...:(
Fuck the fucking fuckers. Spam should be a felony...punishable by death.

Where does spam come from?
Mailing lists, and bot nets. If your machine's zombied, it's not going to send spam to YOU. It sends it to other people. Regardless of how compromised your box is, it doesn't affect your spam quantities.

And if you were like me and have "first-initial.common-last-name@gmail.com" then you will get soooooooooooooo much spam even if you never use that address for anything. They are common choices (obviously) and they are automatically added to spam lists because they are almost guaranteed to exist.

Of course. I have heard repeatedly that one of the reasons for the increased amount of spam is that there are an incredible number of zombied boxes out there. This is what I was referring to.

But, just for fun, what if you have multiple boxes and one is zombied? Seems like you could cause yourself to get spam?
