Anyone else find speakers incredible?

I find it incredible how tiny, plastic cones such as the ones found in Sennheiser headphones can actually reproduce tones in the 30s of Hz.

I found it so incredible that I blew *both* of the drivers in my 585's. 🙁

I'd send them for repairs, but I'd just blow them up all over again.

How so? It's just a pressure wave of air. There are other speakers that use different means than just a paper cone you know. Electrostatic, planars and piezoelectric come to mind.

And electrostatics are the most accurate there are, everybody knows this.

Ummm, those still work by vibrating a membrane.

More people should appreciate headphones. For $5,000 you cvan get he best sound possible out of headphones (talking CD player+ good amp+ good headphones). With speakers, you can spend $100,000 and still not have the best sound possible.

I have grado SR-60s and Senn HD-280s. For $80 a piece, I have some seriously good headphones. It's a giant leap over any $20 headphone or those $200 Bose pieces of garbage. There is no greater joy in the world then letting people with $200 Bose headphones try out my Senns or Grados tyhat cost half hte price. Especially the Senns since they are sealed (noise blocking).

Heh, maybe I should forget about those 585s and get some 280s once I get the dosh, because the 585s were almost as loud outside of the earcups than inside... too much waking up the rest of the residents during late night jams... 😀

But I know what you're saying about serious loudspeakers. I helped build them for a living, for a while. The co. in question got something like $32K (dealer cost) for a pair of reference towers, which were self-amped, 6' tall, 150 lb. beasts. That's if you ordered them in black. Add custom book-matched veneer, and the price just went up, up up...
