I'm 135lb, 5'5", Chinese, in shape, wear size 29-30 pants, and definitely not even chubby. I'm not very skinny either.
I'm 20 now and I just can't swim. I've tried for years with no success, and I think the reason is because my body is too dense compared to the water.
Most people can tread water effortlessly or float with no problem. I just sink.
Even with lungs full of air, if I just go motionless in the water my body will sink effortlessly - and very quickly to boot - all the way to the bottom. Most of my friends have to actively swim DOWNWARDS just to keep up with my sinking speed... I've been in 20ft deep pools and I have no problem sinking right to the bottom without slowing down.
I'm thinking it's hard for me to swim because I have to expend considerably more effort than other people just to stay afloat... which results in me getting tired too easily, too tired to keep on swimming. Even if I lay on my back I have to move quite a bit just to keep my head above the water.
