Anyone else find getting IMs at work annoying?

Just got into a little fight about this, actually. I keep my gmail/gchat logged in because I don't mind the occasional im about plans or other things that I'd rather not discuss on a phone at work... Unfortunately, my wife IMs me all the time, literally every few minutes - saying hi, sending links to funny blogs, or just shooting the breeze.

I logged off because I just had to focus and then she called me, "you gotta check out this new york times article - log in so I can send you the link!" I said a somewhat rude "hon, i really gotta focus and getting on gmail will hamper my productivity..." and.. arhg. now she's annoyed at me.

anyone else hate persistent ims during a work day, or does it help your day move along faster?

Tell her your work blocked it or something.

Lying is lame. Anyways, my wife will usually text me once or twice during her lunch but that's about it. Some days I'll respond, other days I wont.

My buddy works full time and he and I converse a lot while he's at the office. He does it because he sits in an office and deals with numbers and said that it helps him stay focused actually because it keeps him engaged in what he's doing. He also comes on here sometimes.

I think gchat is awesome because I can log in on any computer anywhere and still be able to talk to people. This is really useful when I'm on campus and have time to kill.

I like it. I chat with my wife and friends like you described too. All of us understand when we need to focus on work though.

My wife and I email throughout the day when we have time. Sometimes she can get a little impatient waiting for replies and will start to text or call me when I'm busy. That's when I get annoyed.

Getting IM's ANYTIME pisses me off...which is why I've removed all of the programs from my computer...

but then again, I'm OLD...😀

Yeah I should state that whenever I talk to people at their job, there are times when something gets said and no response is given for 45 minutes to an hour for this reason. It's a simple matter of balance and priority.

You people are all old? IMs? That is soooooo Y2K.

The cool kids are txt message and facebook message these days.

I hate them, I often have myself invisible. I also hate phone calls and cube visits. Email me and I will call you if I need to talk.

YES! she gets annoyed if i don't reply, saying "hello? hello?" then escalates it to a phone call, that's what's most annoying to me.

You know, as i get older I'm turning into you. a grouch, i think 🙂

I hate text messages, phone calls, im, facebook messages.. all of that. I'm ok with an email, as long as i don't have to write back right away.. and enjoy hanging otu with people. but when people call me on my phone just to talk.. i just can't stand it!

am i weird?

Tell her your busy.

I gmail chat to my gf at work but when I'm busy I just don't reply as I can't.

no but i hate people like your wife. not her as a person but what you describe her doing over IMs, and then calling you and telling you to log in.

I agree. Many of my IMs go unanswered until I get my dose of reading/posting at ATOT. It's a delicate balance indeed.
