I stopped buying cds when the RIAA started suing customers. Remember, if it weren't for the Supreme Court, using your VCR would be considered THEFT! omg! Instead the ability to record at home spurred nearly every person in the country to buy a vcr leading to the home video market becoming the MPAA's largest revenue stream. Fucking short sighted idiots over there. And the RIAA tried it again when the Rio and Ipod came out. These people are fucking idiots and if they embraced digital distribution instead of fighting it for over a decade they'd be on top of the shit instead of buried in it. Hope the RIAA collapses and artists band together to distribute their music directly.

I stopped buying CDs from bands on major labels (RIAA affiliated) unless it was directly from the band at a show. I still continue to support my favorite, independent artists.

I hate the RIAA/MPAA, and I'm sure some or all of those figures are grossly inflated, but I have no doubt that there has been some affect.

With that caveat, non-RIAA financed cds, yah. I still get my VaCo cds :)

And look, a reasonable approach from....EA???

[Suing consumers] didn't work for the music industry. I'm not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer. Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.

Yes, we've got to find solutions. We absolutely should crack down on piracy. People put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into their content and deserve to get paid for it. It's absolutely wrong, it is stealing.

But at the same time I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money. I'm not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games.

If we learned anything from the music business, they just don't win any friends by suing their consumers. Speaking personally, I think our industry does not want to fall foul of what happened with music.

Same here. http://www.riaarader.com -- best, site, ever. I still purchase some albums from RIAA affiliated labels, but I try to buy them used, so it's not really supporting them.

I'm not a fan of the "If I didn't download it, I wouldn't have bought it" excuse. Why do you feel entitled to listen to music or watch movies without paying for them? Do you have some sort of innate right to this media?

Fine, if it's not good enough for you to buy, don't buy it. But in my opinion you don't have the right to download something just because it's substandard. Either pay for it or go without.

This.

I'm still waiting for an answer as to whether people with this viewpoint think Pandora is "stealing" music. It's perfect for me b/ c I can listen to *almost* exactly what I want w/o really stealing anything.

Pandora is no more stealing than FM radio. They have made deals with record companies for the right to broadcast the music.
