Anyone else feel like Microsoft is stealing Sony's thunder?

It seems kind of weird that Sony has this huge conference, announce a new PS3 model, chop off $100, and all I see in this weekend's ads were ads about Microsoft cutting $100 off their Elite and $50 off of their Pro that's being phased out.

I'm sure my tinfoil hat is probably on a little tight, but all I can think of is a few years ago when PC vendors were talking about how MS was basically putting the squeeze on them not to sell alternate operating systems or they would mess up their OEM deals. Makes me wonder if MS could be up old tricks again, except this time, telling retailers to emphasize the 360 price drop over the PS3 news, or bad things will happen...

It's probably nothing, just seems odd tho.

Or the retailers could just realize that their 360 sales are twice as high as their PS3 sales

Some retailers also have special deals to move the old 360s, like free Xbox Live cards. That may be funded by MS. Has Sony done anything to help move the old PS3s other than drop the price? The fat PS3s don't look like a great deal in compared to the slim PS3 right now.

I think it has more to do with Sony marketing incompetence than Microsoft strong-arming.

I remember MS strong arming the retailers as Krakn mentioned a while back. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried again and put a little "nudge" in their backs and said if you do not feature any PS3 products this week, we send these many xboxes and give you a nice retailer's incentive bonus. As a retailer from a business standpoint, I would side (sellout) with whoever gave me the most incentive, and that's what MS probably did. They have a track record of people buying their systems, so again as a retailer, why not push whatever product will give my store profits. Sony probably didn't offer anything other than a price break.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty shady with all the big box stores have zero mention of the PS3. I don't even recall Best Buy or Target featuring a PS3 game in their ads!

So is that what that MS guy who "addressed" the Gameinformer's console failure rate mean by "...we work really closely with our retailers..."

hmmmm

This week's Best Buy Canada flyer had a few PS3 related things but they were still advertising the old 160gb Uncharted bundle at $499. Talk about a ripoff! No mention of the Slim. Sony has failed to market the console properly but it's no secret that Microsoft does provide "incentives" to retailers and game publishers.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS is paying for the freebies like the free Live 12+1 card I'm getting with my Elite.

Sony just seems to have said "here's the new model, too bad about your worthless old stock." No $249 fire sale, no fat +Sony-paid-for-game bundle everywhere.

Is it any different when sony does this to the other consoles or such?

Competition is usually a good thing and results in cheaper goods for the rest of us.

My _guess_ is that the retailers simply make more money off Xbox 360s because of the (so-far) higher attach rate.

Oh no, Microsoft is using a strategy to combat Sony's price cut! I'm not sure how anyone with any business sense doesn't understand that.

to add to it...people were thinking it would be faster;) its actually slower:p

Heh, I like this guy's post though:
For those who are freaking out over the extra seven seconds of boot time, consider:
That extra seven seconds the Slim PS3 offers may allow you more time to eat another 10 potato chips, therefore, keeping your Fat PS3 encourages weight loss, as you are denied the extra seven seconds to eat more food, you gluttonous oinker. Get on a treadmill!

/means no offense to oinkers, potato chip lovers, or fellow Fat PS3 owners.

To be honest I would have went with the 360 if not for the fact that every single one of my friends that owns one has had oddball hardware issues. Ring of Death, E74 (my co-worker just came in this morning saying the graphics got all glitchy then he got an E74 error message?), another person with RRoD, and one guy I know occasionally has the RRoD but he punches it and it starts working again.

So out of the 5 people I know with 360's, 4 of them have hardware issues. I really want a 360 because of it's media streaming capabilities, good games and ability to play with my friends online but picked up the PS3 slim in the end for 2 main reasons: Dependability, and blu-ray player.

Yeah, on my 3rd 360 replacement of my launch model, and they're still intent on sending me another "fixed" launch model to replace the 2nd replacement. Seems to me if the newer ones are more reliable, maybe they should start sending those out to replace these ticking time bombs they keep mailing to me.

PS3's media streaming capabilities are top notch as well.

If you have something that it won't stream by default, check out the PS3 Media Server. It does a great job of transcoding unsupported file formats on the PS3.

last weekend I got a new slim PS3 to replace my old fat one which had blu-ray play back issues..and I got an Xbox 360 from craigslist.

so now I have choices....while I wait the extra 7 seconds for my slim ps3 to boot I will figure out what to do with all the extra time.. potato chips, bathroom break, cure disease..you know..those vital 7 second things

360 got a price cut? Only recent things I've heard of is about the 54% failure rate.

They do have their own .gov anti-trust enforcement page. Not a lot of companies can say the same thing.

Um, this is not the software sector. The 360 is hardly the only player in the video game industry. In fact, they're a solid second behind the Wii. Throw a little cash to Target/Best Buy/Retailer X's way, and suddenly the 360 price cut is on the front of their ads/websites? Again, what part of that do you not understand?
