I found StarShip troopers to be a very enjoyable flick, I still do. I can't believe for a second that Paul Verhoeven ment for it to be serious. As for Reign of Fire, it's probably going to suck plot wise, but I have to see how they did the dragons... So I'll probably be going tomorrow to see it...

Neither do I. I started to suspect foul play when the news clip about a massacre of interstellar Mormons at Port Joe Smith played. I was fairly certain by the time arms started snapping in half and hands started getting gored during boot camp, and by the time people were getting crushed or torn in half and bugs were spewing plasma out of the asses, I was laughing hysterically. What can one not liek about a parody, a satire, a comedy, and a black comedy combined with lots of crap blowing up and hot women? Nothing.

On first impressions, I thought the movie was going to be about some construction workers that dig up a dragon egg or something, it hatches, and dragons start terrorizing everyone. That would have been cool. However, after reading the real plot, it appears that dragons have taken over the world and small pockets of humans are all that's left. They then devise a plot to kill all the dragons.

Sounds like a combination of Starship Troopers and Battlefield Earth...and we all know how good those movies were :(

How dare you lump Starship Troopers with that . . . that . . . thing. If you did not like Starship Troopers you either have no sense of humor or dumb as a bug. And that's a fact :D

heh totally. didn't starship troopers have connie nieson? so hot:) and it was campy on purpose. from what i've read of reign of fire, its just stupid:p

reign of fire is probably just gay porn. two bare chested buff men scowl and snap at each other denying their true feelings for each other. ;)

It butchered the book?

It never pretended to be about the book. I'm glad too.

Difference is that Heinlein really wished that world would be like the one in his book: extreme right, fascist, militaristic. Verhoeven showed the world to be like that in the movie, but he made a satire out of it. It was so obvious when you watched it (the officers in the end having SS-uniforms? That was your LAST clue that it was all a satire). Most people understood that it was a satire, but there were some dim-wits who actually thought that it glorifies fascism.

yes, there was other differences between the book and the movie. But I don't care, the movie still rocks :D!

I'm a huge Heinlein fan, but I thought that Starship Troopers was boring and one of his worst books. The movie was pretty cool and I'm really glad it wasn't like the book.

As far as I know the only Heinlein books that have been made into movies were two of his worst, Puppet Master being the other one.

So, . . . did anybody else actually see it?

I am guessing - from the lack of reports (coupled with my intuition and seeing the TV commercials) - it was pretty bad (?)

I think that I'd rather see Road to Perdition, instead. Almost every movie reviewer said that it was the better of the two movies coming out this week.

The movie looks okay.

I'll probably just wait until it comes out on DVD to watch it.

Not really interested, but I will buy the DVD to complement my rather large collection of "dragon killing" DVDs. ;)

Well I was pleasantly surprised after reading all the negative reviews. I really enjoyed the film. Good acting, OK plot, and most of the time the special effects were great.

I think the movie would've played better if it didn't take itself sooooooooo seriously. If they want it to be that serious, well....the writing just has to be better.

I also think this movie would've been 10 times better if it had been totally about the downfall of humanity in 2010. Maybe a prequel? That little bit of history, magazine clippings, etc. of the world literally being destroyed really intrigued me. At any rate, it was still enjoyable. Matthew McConaughey impressed me the most...he REALLY played that character well, IMO.

I will be buying the DVD and I think it will be yet another film that is going to play a lot better on DVD.

3.5 stars (out of 5)

Yeah, if you were never interested in it in the first place, it is best to wait for the DVD. It will play much better on the "small" screen anyway. I can't count the number of movies I enjoyed more on DVD...I can't really explain why that happens either.

Yup, that is what I would say to put my review in a nutshell!

The trailer looks pretty cool but I will wait until somebody reviews it here. It could turn into another Godzilla.

I saw it and the the trailer was much better than the movie. What happened to all the helicopters shooting fires at the dragons that they had in the trailer? There was only 1 helicopter in the movie and it didn't even shoot any fire. Talk about a very misleading trailer, that is a big rip off. I know trailers are suppose to entice you to go see a movie but at least have scenes from the movie in the trailer and not just scenes made especially for the trailers. Also, the part that had Van Zandt using an axe in the trailer on the dragon, that scene was so different in the movie. Go see the trailer on yahoo or somewhere else but don't waste your time, stay away from the movie. :disgust:
