Anyone else enjoy overkill?

I don't play the latest, greatest games. With rare exception, I wait until the GOTYE is $5 on Steam with all DLC included. Since I'm always a couple years behind with games, but still enjoy the latest hardware, I find that by the time I play a new game (a game that is new to me) it can be played on high-ultra settings above 100fps. Does anyone else do this or am I alone? My primary gaming monitor is still a 144Hz 1080p model, so when I sit down with a 4-year old RTS or an older MMO or shooter or something I can usually VSync at 144. That just never seems possible with any combination of modern hardware and brand new games.

I'm asking because there seems to be an overall vibe on this forum that if GPU Y can't play brand new buggy Game X at Ultra 4K settings, then it's a failure. I like to think of myself as an enthusiast, but not bleeding edge... is that the difference?

I don't wait as long as you to play a game, but I don't feel a need to play at maxed out settings, though I do play at 80+ FPS. I seem to know a secret that most people don't seem to on the forums and that is that game settings are just a collection of internal settings the dev's presented us. There is nothing magic about them, and they could have presented us with settings that would half our FPS for more IQ, or lower the IQ for higher FPS. Just because we can't use a particular group of settings that they made possible doesn't make the game or GPU a failure.

And 4K is just another setting. If it requires you to turn down other settings to use 4k, it doesn't mean the game doesn't look good. It's a compromise like any other. Using a lower resolution with higher settings is also a compromise.

PC gaming has settings for us to optimize them to our PC system, they are not requirements to play the game.

I get very annoyed by the must max mindset. I'd love to have the option to crank the settings up so the game can make profitable use of advances for years. But people who think they have to max the settings to justify the money they spent on a crazy setup would pitch a fit or something so they don't bother. I'd love to see games shipping with Low, Medium, High, Ultra, Isn't Your Four Card Setup Awesome and That Upgrade In Two Years Is Gonna Rock settings.

But just being able to run full maxed on games and hardware you got comparatively cheap is totally awesome.

Currently playing bioshock 2 op. Then I don't even know what's next. Nothing that's new though. I'm with you in that I play old games but I don't have a 1080p 144hz monitor. I play at 1080p 60hz and use any extra horsepower on vsr for down sampling. Makes a massive difference. I think I'm going to return to the Witcher 2 and try it over uber sampling. I hear it works far better. At least in comparison to dsr.

Witcher 2 with uber sampling is still a challenge for modern hardware. Even a 5960X with a Titan X can't maintain 60fps at 1080p with ubersampling. There will be drops to 40-45 fps in cutscenes and battles.

OP

I'm actually going back to go classic games like System Shock 2, Dues Ex, Fear, NVN, IWD, BG 1 & 2, and planetscape torment.

Same. I rock previous gen games and gear because I'm cheap. I really like for all the bugs to be worked out so that's a side benefit to standing back from the bleeding edge. As for "overkill" my sig rig is the closest I've come lately. Most here would consider it a moderate gaming rig. At 1440p/60hz and ultra eye candy some 2012-2013 games bring it below 60fps.

So unless I go back before 2010 I don't get the 100+ fps overkill. I am definitely an enthusiast. So what's the difference you are looking for? Spending more $$$ to play the latest games at 100+ fps?

To me, there is no such thing as overkill as you can always find a game to bring down whatever configuration you have.

i like it
for me there's no such thing as overkill. 3-6 months after release it's no longer overkill

I bought a 980 when I had a 720p tv and now I have xl2430t so I am buying 980ti or whatever best amd has to offer this month.

But I do buy games at launch to support the devs. I bought witcher 3 but have no plans to play it till modding community is in its full swing. I was playing heavily modded new Vegas followed by borderlands 2. Now I am playing witcher 2 with mods.

I don't crank everything to ultra though. Shadows are always at medium, motion blur is off, bullet decals & high quality grass are not required either but I want loading screens to be minimal and fps to be above 100. Unlike most people claim my eyes can notice fps difference. Another reason I go for overkill setup is that I don't want my hw to go beyond 65 degrees mark. That way I can sell them quickly and recover 70-85% of investment and move to next set of hardware.
