Anyone else do any kayak fishing?

Nice setup. I do kayak fishing but mostly in the ocean. I have a Cobra Marauder with a front and center hatch. It works out well for me so i can stow away the rods/fish etc when I come back in since sometimes you tend to get wiped out by waves.
btw, I didn't see a fishfinder on yours. It's a blast to fish out in a kayak.
 
I got it last saturday so I spent the last week getting the essentials on there (anchor trolley, straps for everything, milk crate, etc.). I threw out $170 on a new Penn/UglyStick combo for cobia and $100 on a VHF radio, not to mention the additional parts I needed to get the Yakima rack set for my civic. Because of this I will wait for now, ask the family for a GPS or Fishfinder come bday time in a month and go from there. I've still gotta add a scotty rod holder in the middle.

It's a work of progress but that's the nice thing about a kayak, you can change it to reflect your needs.

I was surf fishing yesterday and saw a guy in a SOT launch. Looked like it might have been his first time. He has a PFD and the paddle bungeed to the boat. He walks out about chest deep (with someone steadying the kayak for him) he gets in okay and starts flailing the paddle like a mad man. He makes it past the breakers, goes parrallel to the beach and then starts heading in. And this is where he lost it. My son goes "Whoa what the hell!!" And I look up to see this guy riding about a 3 foot swell and then he goes ass over tea kettle. :Q :laugh:. I watched to make sure he came up okay and he did. He kind of just floated in with the capsized kayak.

I'm using a Penn Spinfisher 550SSg with a 7 foot Ugly Stick. Good combo. I also have a 10 foot Tsunami rod when I need to launch lead farther from the beach.



 
When it gets rough in the ocean you can launch out of the park area near "The Cove" and fish in Back Bay near Sandbridge.

It is fresh (brackish) water but some great views

I love Tsunami Trophy rods. You can't find them here locally on the west coast but I always order mine online. Much better value than Lamiglas/St Croix/Loomis etc.
But about the kayak, yeah you need to practice a bit before heading out. My paddle is also leashed to the boat since that's your lifeline; you really don't want to lose your paddle out in the ocean. I've wiped out too majestically in like 13ft swells when coming back in to the beach. My kayak was vertical when I got thrown off. Not fun, but your friends sure have a good time at your expense so its all good.

Got a 321GTI conventional reel with a 7' MH action ugly stick rigged with 30# clear big game.
 
I absolutely love fishing from the kayak. I've kayaked off Virginia Beach several times. Every time we've been up near the base (I can't remember its name) just a few miles north of VA Beach, we've had dolphins alongside us while kayaking. I've seen a few people fishing in that area from kayaks, but never saw anyone catch anything. (I was just recreationally kayaking.) Re: coming in through the waves - we have sit in (not sit on) kayaks. My wife got too far forward on a large wave - right after a tropical storm came through a couple years ago, and as high tide was coming in - sent her ass over teacup too. The kayak was completely filled with water. She got up, saw the surf taking the kayak out, instinctively tried to grab it. Next wave drove the kayak into her leg, snapping it (her leg, not the kayak.) I had no problem riding through the heavy surf back to shore, but snapped my paddle as I arrived at the shore with a large wave. Shore was really eroded at the time.

Maybe we should have an ATOT kayak fishing meet down there some time 🙂 My wife refuses to go back into the ocean in a kayak now though. 🙁

I've never been in a kayak, but I love fishing and the water in general, and I'm looking for a way to get some exercise. I have several friends who kayak for fun, and we were talking about it today.

I've been freshwater kayak fishing (when I get a chance) for about a year now. I started with a sit-in-kayak, but quickly realized that a sit-on-top was a much better platform for fishing. I currently have a Heritage Redfish 12. A SOT is much easier to get in and out of. If you are the handy sort, get the non-angler edition and rig it yourself.

 
I bought my kayak and fishing rod couple weeks ago to try it. I'm eager to get in the water but it's busy season and work has been kicking my butt. Hopefully I'll have a free weekend soon. I'm sticking with freshwater rivers and lakes nearby. I've never kayaked and mainly fished saltwater so it should be interesting.

I'm down for that. Don't have to go in the big bay, lynnhaven is plenty big and pretty sheltered. Give me a call any day of the week and i'm up for a little outing.

Sit-on-tops are the preferred kayaks for fishing because of the larger platform they offer as well as the increased storage. The big brands for those are ocean kayak, wilderness systems, redfish, and hobie, just to name a few.

Depending on where you're going to be fishing depends on the size you need. Shorter boats have a large tendency to "track," i.e. as you take a stroke the bow goes to one side and when you take a stroke on the other side it pivots back, almost like the pendulum on a grandfather clock. The longer the boat is the less chance there is of this, but the less manueverable it is. For me, I make trips out on the bay to the islands of the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel, about a 2 mile trek, so a longer boat that doesn't track is required. The one in the pictures is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 (14' long).

The best advice I can give you is not to buy anything from a sporting goods store without extensive research and if possible, demo'ing it. Many outdoor specialty stores hold these and they usually sell the boats they use in them at a discount.

At 6'2 I would recommend trying out the WS Ride 135, found here. It's a wide boat that's stable but doesn't have much speed. I like the 140 because it's got a blend of both.

That's a nice package you have got there (WS yak, i have the same vest, can't say anything bout the vest or splash deck) but you are really lacking storage.

Now that's just stupidity at it's best. There's a reason SOT yaks have so much space underneath. I could fit all 3 of my poles in there along with most of my gear. Get thru the waves into calm water, and then set up. I cringed as soon as the camera started rolling.
 
Hey, thanks for all of the advice guys. I've been looking at kayaks most of the day (on my break at work, of course...) and I'm leaning towards the Drifter Angler.

OP, what kind of rack is that? I've got a relatively new Impala that I don't want to mar up too bad. 😛

Not bad. Drifters are good but I'd recommend a Ocean Kayak Trident. It has hatches where you can stow away fish, rods, tackle, your fish finder etc.

Yeah, I've been looking at that one too. There seem to be so many that fit my needs. One thing I'm going to want is as comfortable of a seat as possible. I doubt I'll be keeping any fish, but a livewell might be nice for using minnows. The Cobra Pro-Fisherman looks nice.

Edit: Ooh, looks like it could be hard to get though.

You can use a bait tube that one of the kayakers invented and it works awesome.
Take 2.5-3 inch pvc pipe about 2 feet long. Drill holes in it everywhere (don't forget to de-burr the holes on the inside with a file) and attach caps on each end. Tie the bait tube to your kayak with a short line and let it float in the water. Very effective in keeping your bait alive. Costs less than 10 bucks to make.

Regarding the seat. Get a good one for sure. Also there is a company that makes gel pads (yakpads?) for your set and backrest which makes things a lot more comfortable.
 
1. Roof rack is a yakima...very nice, but making sure the measurements are precise is 100% key

2. Drifter is ok, but the lack of storage in the rear could be troublesome. The bait tube idea is good, or you just buy a 5 gallon bucket and a $15 aerator and that'll work. The real question is what you'll be using it for and where do you live?

EDIT: For OK I would stick with prowlers and for WS I would stick with Ride/Tarpon. Dunno much bout the rest.
