Honestly, I expected more out of Apple. I am not about to convert 15GB worth of DivX 5 AVIs I made using my TV tuner, or ripped from my DVD collection, into H.264 or MPEG4 to play them on a new DVP. 2.5" 320x240? I've seen cell phones that can do better. Sure, the fact that it can sustain 30fps through playback is nice, but come on, 320x240?? Also, Apple had a REALLY fvcking bad problem with the iPod Photo/iPod w/color screen (4G only, not the nano AFAIK) headphone jacks, where any high frequency noises like pianoes or sometimes even female vocals would sound very distorted on any low impedance headphones, the Shure E2C and Sony Fontopia line come to mind first, as both are only 16 ohm. I actually liked the mockup someone made about 2 months ago, where the iPod was now in landscape mode with the click wheel on the right hand side. The smaller click wheel looks like it belongs on the mini, empty space = not cool. I'm gonna wait till I see it in person till I actually rant on it, but right now, I'm pissed at Apple for releasing such a minimal "update" to the iPod, just doesn't have the same effect the 3G, and 4G iPods did on people.

It's not for you to watch your videos on, it's for your little sister to buy their $2 TV shows off of ITMS.

Why be pissed?? You arent required to buy it.

I still think a video device in something that small is stupid to begin with.

Yes, as a matter of fact I have, but I don't use proper formatting when I'm ranting.

They're testing the waters on how many people will actually pay for TV shows to download. Personally, if I were a strap hanger I'd love to download last night's Lost and watch it on my way in. But I'm not, so I've got no use for it. They're aiming it to yuppies.

In any event, $2 for an 40-45 minute TV show? That's a very reasonable price.

I agree. Apple is actually doing the music and video industries a favor by selling what would normally be Limewired, thereby giving the coroperations money they'd otherwise never get. I know I'd rather pay $2 for my favorite episoids of Family Guy than risk being tagged over Limewire or Kazaa Lite

Meh, me using my TV tuner to make DivX copies of shows is just as legal as people that use their VCRs and TiVos to record TV shows. The MPAA can suck it, the only TV shows I'm paying for are DVD box sets.

I am a bit. I think the next gen one will be one to buy for myself. More than likely a 2nd gen nano will be what I'll get, if I purchase another ipod (currently have a gen3 that I barely use).

lol @ gurck ytmnd

Gurck was banned a while ago, I think, for being a troll and not knowing when to keep the personal flames to a minimum.

So when will the have portable equivalent of XM radio but TV. Imagine being able to watch HBO/MAX/SHO etc anywhere. TV is boring but having the capability to watch anywhere is interesting.

I love my ipod 3rd gen 20Gb... when that thing dies, I'll buy another one. It's work flawlessly for 2 years and I've damn near used it daily (I listen to a LOT of music)

Somehow I doubt this will last more than 3 hours playing Video. Coincidentlaly, APple seem to be pretty keen to not advertise it's Video playing Battery Life or the lack of a Fast Forward or Rewind function.

I'm no fan of apple but still, you'd expect 6+ hours of battery life & Fast Forward & Rewind too.

No its not, broadcast TV is 525 scan lines, source 4:3 NTSC material is 640x480.
standard tv is 480i. not the same as 480p (ie dtv, ie edtv)

anyways, if you want a video player then buy a video player. not an mp3 player with video as an addon. do you hear people complaining about not being able to play their divx files on dvd players? if they want that, they can buy a divx enabled player. but it's not an iso like mpeg4 or h.264.

anyways, i don't see why people think they need portable video playing in the first place.

$50 for 1GB of storage on a PSP/PDA versus 30-60 GB of room on an iPod? I'll take the iPod.

The way I see it, Apple is being smart here.

They are not releasing a special 'video iPod' that costs a permium over a regular iPod. Instead, they are giving their whole regular iPod line a video enhancement. If you don't want it, that's fine, as you now have an iPod with a very nice screen.
